"Serú Girán's Swan Song",
By Jose Artiles-Gil "José Leopoldo Artiles-Gil" (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Peperina (Audio CD)
"Peperina" was the fourth and last album (1982) of the short but unforgettable career of a major Argentinian-Latin American progressive rock band: Serú Girán. I believe that along with Venezuelan band "Témpano", Serú Girán was probably one the first few bands in Latin America that explored the rich language of progressive rock that at the time was represented in the Anglo Saxon world by bands like Yes and Genesis. After this album a live disc would be published and immediatly the band broke up, apparently due, among other reasons, to its bassist's (Pablo Aznar)decision to leave Serú Girán in order to join Pat Metheny's band. Serú Girán was led by the Argentinian rock icon Charly García. "Peperina" contains three excellent instrumentals: the rollicking "Cara de Velocidad", the sweet and melodic "20 Trajes Verdes" and the longest of the three, also in a melodic although harder style than "20 Trajes Verdes", which is "Lo que dice la lluvia", the piece that closes the album. It also contains memorable songs with good lyrics, like the very "Peperina", "Llorando en el Espejo", "Esperando Nacer", "Cinema Verité and "Salir de la Melancolía". Serú Girán would be also the last try of García with a band. After that, excluding the live performances with the very Serú Girán reunited, he went into a solo career filled of many inventive moments until today, no matter his personal and difficult emotional situation.
