First of all, the track listing on amazon.com's page for this CD is wrong. There are 5 tracks - Unforgettable (nice medium swing edition of the classic), Baubles, Bangles and Beads (up-tempo bop styling of this chestnut), Freddie Froo (a lightning fast bop romp on a Pepper original), My One and Only Love (nice ballad) and Muezzin' (a medium tempo original). This is a first rate west coast recording session from 1957. The personnel include Adams (bari sax), Stu Williamson (trumpet), Carl Perkins (paino), Leroy Vinnegar (bass) and the infamous Mel Lewis on drums. Another gem from reissue king-pin VSOP Records. Highly recommended.

Pepper Adams is outstanding... but I think the digital versions (cd and MP3) have edited his solo from the LP record version... that one is almost 9 minutes long... cd version is 6 minutes... I am pretty sure I am right... his solo is simply shorter on the cd and digital versions and I wish "they"- whoever "they" are, didn't do this. I believe this was originally a subsidiary of Pacific Jazz, who similarly tinkered with a great Jim Hall record he recorded for them years back, "Jazz Guitar", in which the "original concept was damaged by Bock's senseless tinkering, since it was the solos of bassist Red Mitchell and pianist Carl Perkins (whose discography is already limited enough due to his premature death) that were shortened or removed by the original producer." I guess it's not that big a deal and not that noticeable as we casually listen to this and many, many jazz tunes... and I may be a bit of a stickler, but now I have to have both... "if it ain't broke, don't fix it"... and when it comes to music, even if you think it's broke... I'll take the original every time!

This is however, a great Pepper Adams album. Recorded in 1957 in Los Angeles with west coast musicians, this is on the heels of Pepper winning the Downbeat New Star award. There is an expanded version, The Hollywood Quintet Sessions, combining two of these west coast sessions. Band includes drummer Mel Lewis on all the cuts, pianists Carl Perkins or Jimmy Rowles, trumpeters Stu Williamson or Lee Katzman, bassist Leroy Vinnegar, and on the second session fellow Detroit bassist Doug Watkins. Pepper Adams is one hard swningin' cat. Standards, originals, ballads, swingers and mid-tempo tunes are handled with expertise. This is straight ahead jazz from perhaps the top Baritone player of them all!

Great! Haven't heard these in years. Glad they are still around in some format.
