Book Description

January 18, 2011 Pepper Penwell and the Land Creature of Monster Lake
Pepper Penwell is a great manga styled graphic novel which follows in the footsteps of great teeen detectives like Nancy Drew and the HArdy Boys. Something sinister is afoot in the remote town of Monster Lake, Great Britain. Enter Pepper Penwell, teenage sleuth and budding adventurer, armed with her trusty magnifying glass and full to the brim with tea and spunkiness. With the help of her absolutely smashing detective's brain, Pepper sets out to track down a missing drum majorette and uncover all manner of knavish undertakings in this comedic adventure for young adults and up.

4.0 out of 5 stars Another great book from Steph Cherrywell February 22, 2013
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
Steph's work is usually pretty funny, witty and sharp as a tack, and this book is no different. Where her first book "Widgey Q. Butterfluff" lampooned the Saturday morning cartoon, "Penwell" is a tongue-in-cheek tribute to the teen sleuth genre (think Famous Five or Encyclopedia Brown). Pepper is a precocious, perky young miss who finds herself expelled from her private school after proving herself a little too good at the sleuthing game, so she spends her sudden free-time helping out her Dad with a missing-persons case... and of course, the fun and mystery begins, with all the requisite twists and turns.

The artwork is excellent (black and white illustrations, but well-drawn and full of humour and emotion), the story is well-paced, and the presentation of the book shows commitment to the idea of the book; Page 2 even has a fake listing of other books in the "series" with titles just as you'd expect a "real" series would. My only wish is that Miss Penwell does in fact get to go on more adventures, as she is one character that deserves to be expanded upon.

Oh, and for some reason Pepper has a bird that can talk.

5.0 out of 5 stars This book is seriously hard to put down! June 24, 2011
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I read a lot of comics, and Pepper Penwell (and the Land Creature of Monster Lake) is by far the most enjoyable comic I've read all year. The art is grotesquely adorable and the storytelling is a nonstop avalanche of surprise twists and fun! On top of that, Steph Cherrywell crams in enough absurdist humor, visual and verbal, to fill three of your average graphic novels. If you only read it once, you'll miss something. If you don't read it at all, you will regret it for the rest of your life. That is a promise.

5.0 out of 5 stars A terrific read July 29, 2011
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I loved Cherrywell's first book, Widgey Q. Butterfly, and this, his second book, was equally terrific. Cherrywell is a very talented story teller and illustrator. Each illustration is chock-filled with humorous detail making the book well worth a second or third read. You can't go wrong by purchasing this book.
