This is a novel about the early Roman Republic disguised as a science fiction story. Supposedly someone invents a supercomputer that allows anyone to dream that he has assumed the identity of a historical figure. Naturally, this will revolutionize historical research. In this novel, the protagonist assumes the identity of one Horatius, in the Roman Republic, in 553 BC.
The theme of the life of Horatius in this novel is extremely well done. I like well-written novels about ancient Rome, and surprisingly, this is one of the really good ones, for all that Mack Reynolds is known mainly for his science fiction. Forget all the hooey about the Intuitive Computer -- this story is good because it is an insightful look at early Rome and is very well-written at that. If you can find a copy of this one, snap it up. Hopefully it will eventually be available on Kindle for all to enjoy. |
