Percogesic has changed their formula -- they no longer market a version containing Phenyltoloxamine Citrate.

i've used percogesic for 15 or maybe 20 years. it really helps with my severe back pain. i could take it because it did NOT have benadryl in it, like some other otc pain meds do. well, i ordered 2 of these 2 packs and was horrified to see that this is NOT the original percogesic!! it now has benadryl in it! i'm having to send it back. i have gone to every drug store i can to get their "old" percogesic that is the original while i can still find it. going to more tomorrow. i hate this ! why can't these companies leave things that work alone !

I am repeating & extending the *original* Percogesic review here for this double pack product.
BE FOREWARNED that the "extra-strength" Percogesic is *NOT* Percogesic in the original formulation. It may not work as good. This *original* formulation is the ONLY product I am giving a glowing review.
...

IMO, the *original* Percogesic product with (active) ingredients of Acetaminophen and Phenyltoloxamine Citrate is the best over the counter(OTC) pain reliever made in the USA.

I have chronic pain and after many different doctors, tests and way too many drugs a physician recommended this as an alternative. It has been the only OTC pain reliever I can depend upon to provide substantial relief for over twenty(20) years. I am quite certain that I would be a hard core drug addict if it was not for this product. (yes, the pain is that debilitating)
This product does not make me sleepy, stupid or feel drugged. It simply reduces or stops pain. I usually only have to take one tablet to have the pain subside enough to continue functioning in a (relatively) normal manner. Sometimes two tablets and repeat dosages are required but that is, now, quite rare. I ONLY use this product when the pain is unbearable. I do not use it for relatively minor aches and pains. Minor aches and pains are just to be tolerated - it is part of being human. ...
Note: Acetaminophen, even 500-100mg, taken by itself does not work as good for me. The adjuvant, Phenyltoloxamine Citrate, is the ingredient that makes the analgesic work better.

For me, with my body chemistry, it is magic ...

I hope it works as well for you but I must CMA and state that every person's body chemistry is different.

Percogesic is the only product I know of containing Phenyltoloxamine Citrate and acetaminophen. The unusual ingredient is classified as an antihistamine, but it fights inflammatiom in the muscles. I think it is the most effective non-prescription pill available. Good after a hard work out, or if you have fibromyalgia.

FYI - This product has been bought out by the Tylenol people. I had taken the "original" Percogesic for over 35 years. A few months back I purchased this product unknowing that it had been bought out by Tylenol. The analgesic ingredient in this product is tylenol and benadryl - which can be found under numerous other brand names. The original product contained an analgesic called phenylotoxamine citrate - which is not benadryl. This product is the only thing that will get rid of a headache for me and menstrual cramps back in the day. Thankfully one can still locate this product under generic names such as Aceta-Gesic (mfg by Rugby) and others. I now buy this product at a locally owned pharmacy. Shame on Tylenol for changing the entire use for this product as an analgesic to a sleep-aid.

Percogesic has changed their formula -- they no longer market a version containing Phenyltoloxamine Citrate. Now their "original strength" uses the same ingredient as Tylenol PM (but costs the same $$$$ as the old version did). The new version (containing diphahydramine/Benadryl) doesn't work as well for either pain or sleeplessness. I wake after taking Tylenol PM or the NEW Percogesic feeling drugged (which didn't happen with the version containing Phenyltoloxamine).

A generic version of the OLD Percogesic formula (sold on Amazon) is Aceta-Gesic -- NOPE -- that's also been discontinued & replaced with a diphahydramine formula. And I'm on my last bottle. Drat.

Note to everyone else who really wants the original "Original" formula that contained Phenyltoloxamine Citrate - you can still get this over the counter with these names:

Aceta-Gesic (Amazon carries through another seller)ACETA-GESIC TABS ***RUG Size: 100
Genasec (Wal-mart used to carry this but no longer, at least in Florida)
Phenagesic

All three of these are exactly like the original Percogesic before they changed to benadryl

The makers of Percogesic need to know, a.) Their decision to change its formula was a load of BUNK, and b.) They aren't exclusive makers of Phenyltoloxamine Citrate/Acetaminophen products!!! To voice your opinion AND find a generic version of "Original"-Original Percogesic, please read on...

PROBLEM: Re-formulating the active ingredient from Phenyltoloxamine Citrate (aka "The Good Stuff") to Diphenhydramine (aka run'o'the mill Benadryl) changed this from being one of the best OTCs on the market to no better than an entire shelf of drugs that contain the same ingredients. (I found no fewer than 13 name brands - 9 versions made by Tylenol alone! - not including store brands and generics).

SOLUTION #1: Visit the Percogesic parent company's "Contact Us" page ([...] select "Percogesic" from the drop-down and give them a piece of your mind!!! If you want to spit your venom even more, tell them you will boycott this version until they change it back! (For those born after 1985, see: New Coke [[...])

SOLUTION #2: There IS at least one generic formula of "Old" Original Percogesic on the market! It's called Aceta-Gesic by Rugby Labs. You can either: a.) Show some love to your local family-owned pharmacy to order it for you (they need all the love they can get) or, b.) show some love to Amazon (via AmericanWholesale) and spend about $7 per 100ct. bottle. It has some favorable reviews on Amazon and cheaper than Percogesic, new or old. The only complaint I could find was they are not coated and may be harder to swallow for some.

ACETA-GESIC TABS ***RUG Size: 100

FYI: Rugby is the OTC line of generics manufactured by Watson Pharmaceuticals. Watson is the 5th largest pharmaceutical company in the United States based on number of prescriptions dispensed, perhaps best known (by me anyway) for it's generic Vicodin.
