Jo and Milt aren't "very noisy" they're at their musical best. The CD is very noisy. There's a lot of surface noise on this CD and it overshadows the bass. Although the original vinyl disc may have been of audiophile quality this remastering isn't. There is no original art work, just adds for other Essential Media products. There are no track times, credits, liner notes or total playing time. Unless you're really interested in Pappa Jo give this a pass. Even then you might want to think again. $12.98 plus shipping is really expensive for this poor quality product.

I have to agree with others that there is noise on this album - mainly pops that sound as though an old album was recorded directly to tape, scratches and all. As for digitally remastered, they must have enhanced the scratches.

So why five stars? I would normally subtract two for the noise, but felt compelled to give this the highest rating because of the excellent examples of how bassists and drummers should lock in. More importantly to me - a drummer - it's another opportunity to isolate Papa Jo's playing since the only other musician is Milt.

There are sound samples on this page, so use those as a guide as to whether of not this album will meet your needs. I will say that if you are seeking music for casual listening, mentally subtract two stars and move on to an album along the lines of At the "London House" in Chicago, which features both Papa Jo and Milt, plus a great ensemble.

This was one the the three albums Papa Jo recorded for Everest (this one in New York City in 1960). And there is a mystery associated with it. Nowhere in Nat Hentoff's original liner notes is there any credit for the vibes played on Love Nest and Tin Top Alley Blues. The album does claim percussion instead of drums, so I am guessing that Papa Jo played them. The larger mystery is on Little Honey, which features vibes and brushes.

What I love about this album and why I believe it's a wonderful tool for studying is how the tracks represent a wide range of tempos. Moreover, the super fast tempo on H.O.T. and how it was maintained primarily with the hi-hat was instructive. And the amazing brushwork on Walls Fall was another highlight.

If you cannot live with the noise, or you want a more varied study of drummers and bassists I recommend The Supreme Bassists and Drummers. Personally I believe both this and that one are of value, and especially to drummers. Of course, if you are a Papa Jo Jones fan this is well worth owning.

What a great surprise this CD ARE!!! It is pure creativity and conversation between two ancient jazz masters!! Creation, improvisation, feeling and originality....is what this Jo Jones and Mil Hinton's record show to us!!

Jo Jones is FANTASTIC and CREATIVE! Making amazing and originals drums solos. Milt Hinton with fantastic bass conductions and phrases! The 30 seconds you hear here of each music don't' you the real idea what it is.
This is elevate JAZZ: played free, with experimentalism, swing and refined taste without noise.

The bad quality of the bass sound (seems played underwater)is too small comparing with the music they made here!
Buy it know Friend!! You found a teasure!
