Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

K-Gr 2-When fluffy, adorable, and talented TumTum is adopted from an animal shelter, the other resident canine is not happy. Serious and dignified Percy refuses to be friends with such a silly dog, and the fact that everyone loves the happy-go-lucky newcomer only makes matters worse. To show his dissatisfaction, he plays mean-spirited tricks on the interloper, who doesn't let such behavior bother him. When TumTum receives the Pet of the Year award at the summer block party, jealous Percy devises his worst trick yet. He decides to be Delilah to TumTum's Samson. Deep in the night, he cuts off all of the sleeping pup's wonderful white hair. The plan backfires when the townspeople suddenly want to get haircuts just like TumTum's. Percy finally understands that it is the pooch's winning personality and not his fluffy fur that makes him so popular. In apology, Percy shaves off his fur and gains a new look and a new friend. Hill's graphic-style illustrations support the story and extend its humor. Themes of sibling rivalry and bullying are sure to resonate with many readers.-Catherine Callegari, Gay-Kimball Library, Troy, NHα(c) Copyright 2011. I purchased this book mainly because Percy is a dachshund and my nieces are particularly fond of my doxie. What a pleasant surprise to have come across such a gem of a children's book! The artwork is colorful and charming, delightful to the adults and the children. The story is simple, sweet, with a nice resolution and a good lesson for kids about being nice and accepting others. Childrens stories often try too hard to have a moral and end up preachy or dull. I enjoyed the book so much on the first reading that it took a minute to realize it also had a nice lesson included.

My whole family is hoping for more adventures for Percy and TumTum, as well as an animated series, lunch boxes and of course Percyland with a TumTum picnic area. In the meantime, this book will be read and re-read, joining other cherished favorites in the pantheon of childrens books.

Enjoyed this book, gave it as a baby shower gift for friends that have a dog (hopefully their dog won't be as jealous of the baby as Percy is of TumTum!). The art is very playful and unique and the story is great.
