The Perennial Way: New English Versions of Yoga Sutras, Dhammapada, Heart Sutra, Ashtavakra Gita, Faith Mind Sutra, and Tao Te Ching

It doesn't get any less complex than this. These writings touched my Being in a way that no amount of "instruction" ever accomplished. Here's a sample from Tao Te Ching:

Talk of Tao has no flavor.
Look for it--there is nothing to see.
Listen for it--there is nothing to hear.
Merge with it--there is no boundary or end.

This translation finds beauty and truth that were thought to be in the past, then shows them as fully present in everyone's life.

This book is a gem. It brings to life and makes accessible ancient wisdom by presenting it in modern language. The texts are the core texts passed down through two thousand years from Taoism, Buddhism and Advaita and Zen.
What was once considered esoteric wisdom is now available to any serious seeker in this book.

These new interpretations of the classic ancient texts are wonderfully enlightening and I felt the Yoga Sutras, Ashtavakra Gita and Faith Mind Sutra were particularly well done. The version of the Tao Te Ching however, to me anyway, was often awkward reading with the message not coming off very clearly. I still find the best translation of the Tao is, by far, Jonathan Star's Tao Te Ching: The Definitive Edition.

Otherwise, I highly recommend The Perennial Way to those on the spiritual path. It's not often you can get this many powerful teachings all put together for such a low price.

This book answers the question, "If trapped on a desert island, which book would you bring?"
I can not recommend this book highly enough. Thank you Bart for this masterpiece.

We are told, and its true, that words can only serve as pointers, but the words in this book are the best I've ever seen in pointing towards the Real. Being from the West, the old Eastern texts were blurry to my eyes; this book is like the magnifying lens which helps me see.

The chapter Ashtavakra Gita alone is worth all the gold that's ever been mined.


"That which has form is not real.
Only the formless is permanent.
Once this is known, you will not return to illusion."

For me, each and every page of The Perennial Way contains the nectar that, when I am open to receiving, satisfies my thirst for Truth through exemplary Teachings of the Ageless Masters brought to life by an Ageless Master himself.

This book is a reminder. If you've ever heard something that struck a chord inside of you, then reading this book will be like coming back home to that. Of course, when I say 'you' I mean me. I am grateful for Bart Marshall's editing and presenting of these sacred texts in a clear form under one cover. Reading this book was a reminder to me. Of home.
