From the Back Cover

An award-winning gardening expert shares his secrets to season-long splendor

Every gardener knows the quest to create a brilliant, fragrant, ever-blooming garden can be all consuming. You secretly long to be the envy of the neighborhood, with wonderfully crowded beds full of vibrant, dazzling flowers gracing your home from the first spring flush through the last fall leaf. Yet no matter how many specialist nurseries you visit or plant catalogs you pore over looking for just the right combination of colors and shapes, the elusive perennial garden that blooms all season long remains just out of reach.

The trouble, according to gardening expert Douglas Green, is that you're looking for the answers in all the wrong places. The secrets to a beautiful garden all year round are found in your garden's design, plant selection, and arrangement . . . and in these gorgeously illustrated pages.

In Perennials All Season, Green has combined all the tips of the trade into a remarkably simple design system that will allow any gardener, novice or master, to conceive and maintain an uninterrupted display of color and fragrance all season long. Follow his fun, down-to-earth guidelines and expand the flowering range of any garden. You'll learn how to lay a perennial bed for optimum lushness, select plants that will complement each other's flowering cycle, and position plants according to bloom time, color, and form.

All the techniques the professionals use to develop stunning displays are covered in this comprehensive how-to, including foolproof formulas for determining proper bed and border proportions, visual tricks that de-emphasize unsightly nonflowering areas, and the ingenious employment of an everyday garden hose to simplify the layout process. You'll discover how to choose a focal point--fountain, plant, or birdbath--for your garden and design around it, as well as how to incorporate a backdrop, whether a brick wall or a backyard pond.

Complete with up-to-date information on high-performing plants, newer varieties, and outstanding foliage, this guide is an essential gardening tool. Special features include:

More About the Author

Doug Green, award winning garden author, brings a down-to-earth style and easy gardening systems to his lifetime of organic garden achievements.

A semi-retired nurseryman, Doug has been answering beginner gardening questions with organic remedies for over 30 years and looks for ways to succeed that don't involve a lot of work or complexity. Refusing to take himself seriously, he believes in enjoying gardens, not working in them. If he's not writing about gardens, he's out enjoying them (or even out sailing) on his island home out in Lake Ontario. Occasionally, he will work in one but he's on a lifetime quest to have a garden that doesn't involve the concept of "real work".

Doug answers gardening questions on his 8 websites and writes because (as he so wryly puts it) it's "easier than working for a living".

What his friends will tell you is his books are works of love because he'd rather write and garden than do most other things.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Perennial Gardening and Design Book!, September 15, 2003
This review is from: Perennials All Season : Planning and Planting an Ever-Blooming Garden (Hardcover)
I have alot of gardening books and this one stands out as a winner that I highly recommend. It is a book for beginners as well as advanced seasoned gardeners. What I love the most and what made me buy this book is how he takes his 30+ years of gardening experience and distills his knowledge into very easy to learn principles.

He doesn't talk down to his readers or use terminology that is over the head of the average gardener. His tonge-in-cheek and witty comments shows that he is a normal gardener like the rest of us, making mistakes, buying the wrong plant and putting it in the wrong place but that's part of the fun of gardening, trial and error and seeing what works and what doesn't. A great book to curl up on a couch/hammock to read and dream how you're going to change your garden soon.

5.0 out of 5 stars Helpful Information for Aspiring Gardening Artists, June 10, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Perennials All Season : Planning and Planting an Ever-Blooming Garden (Hardcover)
Upon receiving this book, I glanced through it to see what it had to offer. I was very pleasantly surprised.
What most excited me, as an experienced gardener who is ALWAYS looking to expand my knowledge, were the many suggestions and explanations for the non-trained gardening "artist" that would help one better understand the principles of design and the use of color.
The information on the author's suggested plants for an ever-blooming garden were explicit, yet concise, and would benefit the average gardener as well as the beginner.
Within 24 hours, I had read the book, highlighted it, and recommended it to several gardening friends. In addition, I spent the day moving many perennials in my large mixed border to achieve, what appeared to me to be, an overall improvement in the design of my perennial garden. I look forward to seeing the results of the changes I have made as the season progresses.
This book, I think, offers the gardener, who might be tentative in his/her design decisions, knowledge that allows one to improve upon one's overall plan with a better understanding of the design principles presented and how to use them most effectively.
