5.0 out of 5 stars A 10 for The Perfect 10
I bought the book around the same time that I received the CD version of this diet. Let me tell you, if you really want to lose weight, this is a diet that you can finally stick to. Forget low-carb, low-fat, high protein and all those other fad diets. This is finally a diet tht is balanced and sensible and, most importantly, doable for most people.

This review is from: The Perfect 10 Diet: 10 Key Hormones That Hold the Secret to Losing Weight and Feeling Great-Fast! (Hardcover)
So the "Perfect 10 Diet", as others have mentioned in their reviews, asks you to essentially get rid of sugar, white carbs, artificial sweeteners, artificial additives, high-fructose corn syrup, and preservatives. You are asked to then stock up on all organic foods and full fat products. Sounds reasonable. However you'll find that your fridge and pantry is empty and you'll end up with one heck of a grocery bill.

Being a poor college student, I simply cannot afford that. I wish I could but that's just not in the cards. If you are someone who is in a pinch financially, I don't recommend this diet.

I do appreciate the research that went into this book. It's definitely credible. Yet, I find that the book is rather redundant. I get it that our hormones are thrown off by an unhealthy diet. I get it-- organic is better and the white stuff is evil. But, I don't need every single chapter hitting me with the same facts time and time again. I think the book could have been half to a third of the size it is.

I don't necessarily blame Dr. Aziz for this. I'd say an editor is more to blame for that. In fact, I applaud him for trying to get America back to a more natural and balanced diet. It is interesting to hear that Atkins and low-fat diets are not the answer and are in reality detrimental to our health.

The most valuable things to take away from this book are the following:

1. No matter how you want to spin it, sugar and white carbs are nothing but bad news because they mess with your hormones

2. Low-fat and Non-fat products are worse for your health than full fat-- it has more sugar and you'll store that as fat

3. Increase your vegetable and fruit intake

4. Stick to 3 square meals a day; don't skip breakfast and try not to snack

5. Processed food and artificial things are bad: organic, organic, organic

6. Move more

Voila, there you have it. I think my main issue with this diet is that it is spun as if it is completely non-restrictive. I found just the opposite. He says it is not low-carb when it actually is, fyi. It's not the Atkins, but it's not a carby diet.

I also wasn't a huge fan of the recipe suggestions. As I said earlier, I can't afford having grilled sea bass, duck breast and lobster often. I was really disappointed on that count.

So what do I recommend? If you are looking for a more accessible diet along the same vein, I'd say Dr. Oz's book "YOU on a Diet" is more helpful. They both agree that sugar, white carbs and high-fructose corn syrup are evil. They both say we should all be exercising more too. These things make sense. However Dr. Oz proceeds to break down the science in a very user friendly manner and I think his suggestions are on the whole more practical.

Bottom Line: If you want to overhaul your life and you have the money, go for it. For me, I'm going to modify the "Perfect 10" to my life and probably refer to Dr. Oz more.

5.0 out of 5 stars A 10 for The Perfect 10, February 7, 2010
This review is from: The Perfect 10 Diet (Audio CD)
Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)

Do you remember when you were young and you could eat just about whatever you wanted. Then came diets. It seemed that the more you dieted, the more weight you ultimately gained! But...most of us had parents, grandparents, or older relatives who ate real butter and cream, had eggs every day for breakfast, and yet remained slim all their lives. How did they do that and why can't we?

Well, Dr. Aziz gives you the science behind why their eating habits worked and why they can still work for us today. He identifies 10 major hormones and tells why they get out of whack with today's eating habits, and discusses the devastating effects upon our bodies and health. BTW, Dr. Aziz is referring to The Perfect 10 as in great health, not being a perfect 10 in physic...although that is likely to happen if you follow his eating plan.

He tells us that we need MORE fat in our diets to help with appetite control, but that the fats must be wholesome and real (none of those manufactured chemicals of fake fat), and that they must be balanced with protein and carbohydrates. His basic formula is 40% carbs, 40% fats, and 20% protein. He emphasizes quality and organic foods are key elements to this diet. He also pretty much forbids sugar and refined carbohydrates as being empty calories and creating a yo-yo effect upon insulin and other body hormones. In essence, following this diet will enable your blood sugar to level out resulting in you feeling better and having more energy. This diet is similar to The Zone and The Flat Belly Diet but with more added fat and greater balance. Most of us don't have the will-power to give up fats forever and Dr. Aziz doesn't encourge that. Balance is the emphasis of this diet.

I have both the book version and the CD verion. I didn't think I would like the CD version but I do. It comes with 8 CDs, each about an hour long, and which are easy to follow, plus a non-audio bonus CD which includes much of the book including the charts, recipes, and a whole lot more. It would have been a bit more convenient if a mini-book had been tucked into the CD package but this is a good addition.

If you intend to follow this diet plan, you will need a good calorie/nutrient book to supplement your plan. I recommend The Complete Food Counter by Natow and Heslin which not only lists most major food components and brands, but calories, protein, fat, carbs, cholesterol, fiber and sodium. It also has a pretty good listing of menus from major food chains which is helpful for following the diet while eating out.

If you're tired of feeling sluggish, not sleeping well, depressed, and overweight, try this diet. It's easy to follow and it just might be the answer you're looking for...finally!

5.0 out of 5 stars Lost 23 pounds so far. And this book is life changing., December 28, 2009
This review is from: The Perfect 10 Diet: 10 Key Hormones That Hold the Secret to Losing Weight and Feeling Great-Fast! (Hardcover)
I had an advance copy of this book from Book Expo and I put it to the test starting in mid-September. So first, I am a diet failure. I have failed on every diet I've ever tried so I was really nervous about trying this one and assumed that it too wouldn't work. And I was really shocked when I started to lose weight. And my family was too!!! So I kept a chart and this diet really worked (and it's still working!!)

So now I'm at 23 pounds (hoping to make 25 pounds by the New Year). But what's important (I think) is the many ways that it's changed me. At Thanksgiving the kids were shocked (I mean really shocked) when I started playing football and frisbee golf outside with them. I have so much more energy. I feel clearer (like my head is clearer). My husband says there's 4 or 5 inches gone from my waist. I've had to buy new clothes. And it's easy to travel with (I travel a lot) and to entertain with (entertain a lot too). You know exactly what you can and can't eat and you don't ever go hungry because it's really about what you eat (it's about the hormones).

So while I've tried lots of diets, this is the first one that's ever worked for me. And now I have a plan to have all the extra weight gone (I needed to lose 60 pounds in total...so am 1/3 of the way there) by my next birthday. And I think I can do it. It's all about balancing hormones. Got it!

5.0 out of 5 stars so glad I bought this book, February 5, 2010

This review is from: The Perfect 10 Diet: 10 Key Hormones That Hold the Secret to Losing Weight and Feeling Great-Fast! (Hardcover)
I was very skeptical when I first bought this book, but it TRULY is life changing. I have never been a health nut and not really interested in diet books but this is actually a really good read. I have lost 10 lbs. in 2 1/2 weeks and more importantly, I feel better. My cholesterol, triglycerides, and sugar levels have decreased dramatically. Sometimes the Dr.'s tone is a little hard to take...he seems a little pretentious. But I respect what he is doing and I am so glad I came across this diet. I have to say, it's a real eye-opener folks...we have basically been lied to at the expense of our health all in the name of higher profits. Give the diet a try...I don't think you will regret it.

This is an easy to follow, good diet. The ingredients will be easy to find in the grocery store. It is basically telling you not to eat sugar or refined carbs, but mostly healthy fats and proteins. At first, you can eat carbs, but only in the form of fruit and veggies. Organic food is the best for this diet. Portions are not listed in the book anywhere, so there is no measuring of any foods. Basically, if you are eating the proper foods, portions and calorie-counting are not needed. I like this. After being on Weight Watchers and measuring every stinking "point", it is nice not to have to perfectly measure all foods. Also, he says it is ok for pregnant women to eat these foods, and I am breastfeeding, so it is nice to know that it is a good diet for baby too.

5.0 out of 5 stars A life Changer, April 14, 2010

This review is from: The Perfect 10 Diet: 10 Key Hormones That Hold the Secret to Losing Weight and Feeling Great-Fast! (Hardcover)
This book/diet is amazing! I'm on day 10, and I've already lost over 10 lbs! (and I wasn't a big girl to begin with) I feel better in every way. I'm not starving myself -- just eating 3 healthy meals a day with a balance of all the right foods. The difference is, now I feel better educated on what the RIGHT foods are. (I thought I knew before, but I didn't!) Reading the book was so eye opening and sets the record straight on the many lies we've grown up to believe about food and nutrition. Plus there were so many insights on foods I've been eating that I thought were harmless, but didn't know how they really affect my hormones! I finished the book in a week, and continue to go back to it for reference. This is truly a diet that you can adopt for your lifestyle. I've told everyone I know about it, and it's spreading like wild fire where I live. BUY THIS BOOK!!!

2.0 out of 5 stars Nothing new here, April 9, 2011
This review is from: The Perfect 10 Diet (Audio CD)
Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
I had a hard time figuring out why I disliked this book and writer so much. I finally decided it was the writer and what he wrote. He keeps claiming (over and over and over...) that he is the one who figured out what we needed to do, the ONLY one who ever thought of it and EVERYONE else is wrong... including the Mediterranean diet because it wants us to eat Greek food. He says the Mediterranean diet WOULD work if we decided to work in the fields ten hours a day. Every other diet is tragically flawed.

Ironically most of what he has to say is pretty much what every OTHER fitness guru has been saying for the past several years. Nothing new here. The preservatives and fake sugars in our fake food are poisoning our bodies, making our systems go haywire, messing up our hormones, and making us gain weight. Many of us have been working hard to eliminate the processed foods from our diets. We read labels with a certain amount of suspicion and cynicism. We try to monitor what is going into our children's food, even at school. We are eliminating sugary drinks and definitely anything with high fructose corn syrup.

The audio CD was a terrible way to go in this instance. You know how you can skim a lot of informational books - especially when they are so repetitive? You can see that the page is on the same topic. It's really annoying when someone says things three times in a row, just using slightly different words. This guy likes the sight of his words on the paper. (See? I just did it. Three ways of saying he repeats himself.) When you have an audio CD, you can't skip ahead or check the pages to see how far you can move without losing the gist of it.

I found nothing in this book that was new, only disdain for all of the others who have already told us about the hormones and preservatives in our food. Apparently, this writer is the only one who knew what he was talking about.

4.0 out of 5 stars Maybe Dr. Aziz finally got it right, February 3, 2010

This review is from: The Perfect 10 Diet (Audio CD)
Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
I received The Perfect 10 Diet in the audio book form -it is unabridged, the complete book. There are 8 CD's included, and a bonus disc (not an audio disc) that includes all the charts, graphs, figures, recipes, sources, etc. that you can print out. Fred Stella narrates the audio version and has a pleasant, easy-to-listen-to voice. However, maybe Mr. Stella's voice is too easy to listen to, I found myself falling asleep during several of the discs, and I had to go back and re-listen to them. This was my first audio book, and will be my last one, as I like having an actual book to thumb through, or to go back to check a reference, much better.

It took Dr. Aziz many years to research and write this book, he certainly didn't want it to be a quick fix with lots of erroneous unsafe advice like what is currently all over the internet. It's a plan that you can easily stay on the rest of your life. It's safe and can be used by ANY age - adult or child. The book is written in easy to understand language, not a bunch of medical jargon that you would need a degree to understand.

The Perfect 10 Diet also has a web site with some good recipes - I'm not allowed to post the link here, but you will find it by Googling it.

Basically, any food items where you can't pronounce the ingredients are off limits. Which makes perfect sense, as all those chemicals ingested can't be good for us. Eat as close to the natural state, and organic is best, if possible. No fake food. High fructose corn syrup is definitely a no-no!

You also need to follow as closely as possible the 40% carbohydrates, 40% fats and 20% protein rule --- this will be explained fully in the book. You get to eat carbohydrates - but they are good carbs! You get to eat (natural) fat! Sounds a little like Atkins, but it is not as restrictive. Adkins does nothing to help your hormone levels, like this eating plan does.

Dr. Aziz "puts down" just about every diet I've tried in the past: Atkins, South Beach, Sugar Busters and NutriSystem. And maybe he is right - I failed on every one of these, eventually....fairly easy to lose on these diets, but the weight came back.

I've been following this eating plan for 2 weeks so far. I had been on an eating binge since Thanksgiving and gained 6 lbs. on top of what I already had to lose. When I chose this book to review, I decided I would give it a fair shot for a minimum of 2 weeks before I wrote a review on it. Well, I wish I would have known about this 20 years ago! I'm not hungry at all and I feel so much better. Dr. Aziz also recommends exercise 3 to 4 times a week, I haven't started on that yet, but plan to add that later this week or next.

I've been on high blood pressure medicine for 4 years. I visited my doctor 2 days ago for a check-up. Although I'm not off the medication, she wrote me a prescription for the next lowest dose from what I'm currently taking. I've lost 9 lbs. (yay!) but I expect it to slow down soon; that's just normal, and that's ok with me since this is for a lifetime.

I will have lab testing done before my next visit in 6 months and I'll post an update then to let you know if this way of eating has affected my blood work.

This review is from: The Perfect 10 Diet: 10 Key Hormones That Hold the Secret to Losing Weight and Feeling Great-Fast! (Hardcover)
I tried the diet in this book, really skeptical at first, but lost about 6 pounds in a little over a week. My favorite thing about it was eating full-fat yogurt which is so much more filling and tasty than nonfat yogurt I had been eating. And also just not being scared of eating normal food (I hate buying low-fat food that has like 30 ingredients on the box). I really recommend it! But also think the hardest thing about this way of eating is being organized with what you are eating and having the right groceries in your house.

This is a great book. It teaches you to eat clean, healthy foods. I have just completed week 6 and I have lost 16.5 pounds. I have tried every diet under the sun, lose ten pounds get bored and gain that ten plus more back. The recipes I have tried are easy to make and very good. I have finally broken the diet soda habit. I cook at home more which saves me money. My dessert of choice is a gala apple. I don't crave sugar anymore and I am not hungry. I love this book and I would recommend it to anyone.
