Book Description

The official prequel novel of the epic film After Earth, directed by M. Night Shyamalan and starring Jaden Smith and Will Smith
After their exodus from Earth, the last humans settled a remote planet, Nova Prime. When an alien force known as the Skrel descended from the skies, the United Ranger Corps, an elite defense unit, valiantly resisted. Centuries passed without an attack, and many colonists believed that, with other security measures in place, the resources devoted to maintaining their military strength would be better spent elsewhere. Little did they know that trouble was coming to Nova Prime—and it had a taste for blood.
The latest in a long line of decorated warriors, Conner Raige is one of the Rangers’ most promising young cadets, although his brash confidence and tendency to act on instinct have earned him as many skeptics as admirers. Conner’s ancestors were on the front lines of humanity’s victory against the Skrel. But when a deadly ground war breaks out, Conner’s up against an entirely different beast—because, this time, the Skrel have brought a secret weapon: ferocious killing machines designed to eliminate humanity from Nova Prime . . . and the universe.

BONUS: Includes the first three novellas of Ghost Stories, the thrilling eBook original prequel series!

From the Paperback edition.

I really liked the movie and the novel, but the prequel gives you more information on the mysterious "skrel" what they really want and their views and aims.

4.0 out of 5 stars a good sequel July 27, 2013

I like the book, but it is not as compelling as the first book and I felt that many pages were filler pages with little relevance to the rest of the story. I therefore skim the chapters a lot. However, I continue to return to the book to search out exciting and intriguing pages.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great! July 1, 2013

This book gave so much information and back story to the plot of the movie. It was extremely well-written and I couldn't put it down! This universe they created is so unique and wonderful.

5.0 out of 5 stars An engaging read, you'll have trouble putting this down. September 29, 2014
Format:Mass Market Paperback
Prequels are never as good as the original, right? This book, a prequel to the After Earth movie, is an exception to that rule. After being disappointed by the movie, I had avoided this book, but on a whim picked it up while on vacation. Once I started reading, it became quite difficult to put it back down (sleep is overrated anyhow),

The book contains a number characters, each with a share of character development and a separate story line. Part of the excitement of reading this was seeing how the characters interacted, and how their individual stories would progress. The authors managed to surprise me with some quite unexpected twists.

What also caught my attention was how some of the characters' political machinations moved the story. Machinations which reminded me of the conflicts in our current-day political system. (It was also interesting to see that the Skrel had to deal with their own politics. An alien menace is more often portrayed as a simple 2-D "warlike race" with no further depth.)

All in all, a thoroughly engaging story. This is the story they *should* have used for the movie

4.0 out of 5 stars Better than the movie August 19, 2014
Format:Mass Market Paperback|Verified Purchase
The movie was terrible. However, the prequel novel was great. Puts that film to shame. After listening to several people's online reviews, it seemed they were confused about anything that had to do with the Skrel/Human war. Even though the movie was bad, I understood it because of this novel. The movie actually did a pretty bad job about explaining it as well. Even if you hated the movie I would encourage you to read this book. Gives better insight to the AfterEarth-verse.

In 1984, he moved to DC Comics where he worked as an editor or administrator until 2000, earning plaudits for his work on the Star Trek comic book.
