I am an American-born Chinese girl, who recently moved back to America after living in Taiwan for 13 years. Because good food is so accessible in Taiwan (and because the cookbooks are all in Chinese), I never learned how to cook Chinese. It didn't take me long to miss that good Chinese food.

I found this cookbook by accident and bought it, because each recipe was beautifully illustrated and because it included a number of familiar dishes that I would classify as "traditional Chinese" as well as some that are "American Chinese." It's too bad there isn't an image posted, but the cookbook is laid out in a contemporary style with ingredients in a narrow column on the left side of the left page, the recipe filling up the other side of that page, and a photograph on the right page.

noodles & rice
vegetables & side dishes
desserts
index

I've tried a few recipes and found that it's pretty authentic (my American husband likes it too). The only things I wished it included are recipes for beef noodles and green onion pancakes; otherwise, I wholeheartedly recommend this cookbook.

NOTE: This is my first Chinese cookbook in English, so I don't have a basis for comparison.
