You'd think it would be hard to get excited by something as inane as a paper towel holder. I originally saw this product in several mail-order catalogues, priced at 30 - 40 dollars. For the 10 bucks it's priced at here, it is WELL worth it! I work behind a bar and have two of this item back there - being a bartender I'm almost constantly wet from being elbow deep in the sinks. I hate handling things or making drinks with wet hands, so on a busy night I probably go through 7 or 8 full rolls of towels. I use so many, a customer recently asked if I was Obsessive Compulsive - not quite, but I like clean and dry surfaces everywhere around the bar. These holders have held up well, I thought the ratcheting mechanism might be cheaply made and eventually give out - no sign of that yet. The ratchet is well made and well balanced - not so much resistance as to force you to dispense a single sheet at a time, but enough that you can tear whatever you've pulled off at the perforation every time. It's also solidly built and handles abuse really well - when busy, I won't fuss with a delicate mechanism - everything gets slammed around and knocked around with considerable force. Towel rolls remount quickly and easily. I'm pretty rough on equipment and have broken most things behind that bar at least once. This product definitely holds up under the toughest commercial abuse. If you're a big fan of the oversized rolls, they may rub against whatever surface you mount this too, but it still works.

Initial Review Posted 2-26-10: With my family having the wasteful habit of tearing off 2 to 4 sheets to wipe up a few droplets on the counter, this holder is one of the best investments I have made in awhile. My family was going through $30 per month in rolls and now the usage is down to less than $15 per month. Made my money back in less than 2 weeks!

4-3-10 Update after using the product:

I purchased 2 of these and now find that although initially these holders worked excellent and as advertised, I now have no recourse but to downgrade my rating from 5 stars to 2 stars. The problem with this product is not the design - in fact the ratcheting/tension mechanism is pure genius. The problem lies in the materials they used to manufacture the product. After disassembling the broken holders I found that the internal ratchet that produces the tension on the spool is made of the cheapest thin brittle plastic I've seen. The plastic spline on the ratchet on both units broke with normal use within a month. After they break, all you have is a normal roller without tension. Had they thought of upgrading the material to metal for the ratchet/spline and charged a little more for this product, I'm quite sure people would be happy to pay a bit more for this product, as it was very useful before it broke.

Hold the cardboard tube, not the towels, as you press a roll onto the spindle or the towels will "telescope." No yanking off 20 towels by accident and true one-handed operation. Solid construction and unobtrusive footprint. Great product!

The product works as advertised: You can tear off a paper towel with one hand with no ripping.

The only downside is that it is a bit noisy due to the ratchet system used.

Decent design in terms of both functionality and appearance.

Note: I have mine oriented horizontally. The experience may be different if mounted vertically.

Oh how happy I was when we first met! It was everything I'd ever dreamt a a paper towel holder could be. Stylish, responsive, and never wasted my time or a single towel. I bragged about it to my friends and family - I'd finally met a towel holder I could imagine living with for a lifetime. If only all kitchen appliances could work so well. It made me smile just to tear off a towel with which to clean the stovetop.

Now it's three months later, and it has betrayed me. It has stopped working. I am all the more disheartened, because I had been expecting so much. The ratcheting system that had been the basis of our special relationship is broken, gone, as if it had never existed. Towel rolls just spin freely, as they do with any other cheap towel holder. And try as I might, I cannot find any way to repair it! There isn't even a website with an address to which to direct a letter.

This paper towel holder raised my hopes for performance to a height I'd never seen before, only to callously fling them down to the stony ground far below.

If you want to get your heart broken and your hopes dashed by yet another kitchen appurtenance, buy this. Otherwise, you are better off with the plastic gimcrackery you can get at the supermarket. At least that junk costs far less.

This is going in the pile of modern kitchen appliances that are garbage, next to the three toaster-ovens I'd tried in the past five years. What ever happened to quality?

Seriously - a major disappointment, appliance-wise.

When I bought this, it was only $10.99, a price a bit too low for me to consider it to be a high quality product. Now, I don't often write reviews, and considering that I am writing a review for a paper towell holder on top of that means I thoroughly enjoy the product. It holds the towell roll tight and firm and gives a nice steady click as it turns. I attached it to my wall (you can hang it upside down or vertically) and it is amazing. AMAZING! Thinking about a paper towell holder? Look no more. This product was much, much more than I anticipated.

This an excellent product best design I have seen for this product. Also don't believe it; you can mount it either on the wall or under the kitchen cabinet. You can't find a better paper towel holder than this one

Well, like some others I thought this was going to be the best thing since sliced bread.
Sadly it has lasted only a month.
That's when it stopped having any resistance and started spinning freely.
Found the company #1-800/662-0040 and gave them a call.
They are sending a replacement item.

Now for the problem details - - -
the center rod is screwed into the base section.
If you were to grab hold of the center rod tightly
at the pointy end it can be taken apart.
Make sure it is tight with the base.
Under the larger black plastic section
there is a clicker with four tabs.
Some how they are what are breaking off
and causing the item not to work as designed.
Perhaps (?) because the center rod was never tightened enough
and matting the sections properly....
just my guess at this point!

We barely had this paper towel holder for a month and the clicking mechanisim on the inside has already broken. Now the holder just spins and spins, just like any other holder. Don't waste your money. Just buy a regular holder.

My towel bar search became a mission. I bought and returned 4 types of towel racks including Oxo. The advertising on this one states 'one way ratcheting' mechanism which held me off as it seemed that rewinding would be a problem if you pulled off too much towel. Not a problem, the ratchet works both ways just like the countertop Kamenstein.

Easy to install.

Easy to load.....very easy!

Easy to use.

Looks good.

Out of the way, countertop is clear again.
