3.0 out of 5 stars Good plot, but biased!!
This story has a good plot, and it's well written. But the author's bias against America is apparent. He repeatedly portrays the Americans as technologically advanced, but ignorant of the world, while the natives are all-knowing, grounded, and full of earthly knowledge. If it weren't for the anti-American slant, I would probably have rated this book much higher.

With masterful storytelling, Perfect Circle takes us on a journey of adventure and intrigue set in the deep recesses of the jungles of Africa. When a drilling team discovers something unnatural buried deep in the earth, some dream of riches while others seek control. Crooked deals with brutal Warlords bring death and destruction that mirrors the atrocities not covered by news. Above all it becomes a journey of faith. Would you have the faith to trust an unknown, ancient civilization enough to act on their advice? Would you back that trust up with your life?

The characters in this book are real and engaging. The cultures are vivid and believable, heart wrenching at times. For a few moments I walked in the shoes (or bare feet as it were) of an African Pygmy, and brushed off Western standards of social behavior like so much fluff.

I was captured from the first chapter, and thoroughly satisfied by the end. Perfect Circle, was a pleasure to read.

5.0 out of 5 stars exhilarating brisk science fiction thriller, December 5, 2008
This review is from: Perfect Circle (Mass Market Paperback)
Hugh Reece, President of International Mining Corporation, regrets what he did that drove his heir grandson Paul away. He knows the Congo discovery needs Paul as the lead field geologist opening the shaft and going down the four miles into the earth to discover what is there. The firm contacts the estranged Paul who, though he remains irate with IMC and his grandpa, agrees to invesitgate.

However, as Paul and his crew prepare for the inner earth journey, the Congolese natives who have lived here for generations, know what he will find. They have been waiting for this day and believe Paul is the chosen one to rapel down the chute to either save or destroy civilization as the west knows it.

This is an exhilarating brisk science fiction thriller with echoes of Journey to the Center of the Earth. The story line is fast-paced from the moment Paul reaches the Congo and never slows down. However, it is the strong characterizations especially the flawed and remorseful Hugh and the angry Paul who bring a human frailty to the PERFECT CIRCLE.

4.0 out of 5 stars Exciting tale set in the African jungle, April 8, 2009

This review is from: Perfect Circle (Mass Market Paperback)
This is an exciting tale set in the jungles of Africa. Deep beneath the crust of the earth, a structure is found that defies everything we know. The heir of a powerful corporation is sent to find out what is inside, and discovers the biggest secret in the history of mankind.

I really loved the premise of this book. The characters show the best and the worst humanity has to offer. At first I had a little bit of trouble with some of the background history of the main character, but by the time I got to the end, everything took on a different look, and in a way, everything fit perfectly.

Wonderful read, I would recommend it to everyone looking for a good book to dive in to!

I thought this book sounded good when I read a shory synopsis. It didn't disappoint. Great story and good character development. I hope the author does NOT sell to Hollywood because they will massacre this fine story. I recommend highly.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Perfect Blending of Sci-Fi & Adventure!, December 20, 2008
This review is from: Perfect Circle (Mass Market Paperback)
Carlos J. Cortes's debut novel is a solid read from beginning to end.

If you like and enjoy something fresh in scope and concepts in sci-fi, then Perfect Circle will enhance your brainwave function with a mix of derring-do and technological wonders from both sides of the spectrum that will sure to please readers of Michael Crighton and Issac Asminov.

When the main character, geologist paul Reece inherits his family's very rich mining conglomeration, not in his wildest imaginings would he have thought of the wonders he would encounter, not only in the deepest jungles within the Congo, but even deeper within the depths of the planet!

Chock-full of interesting and varying characters, Carlos Cortes's Perfect Circle will thrill the adventerer in all of us, balancing his fantastic debut novel with mystery, suspence, romance, adventure, and scientific knowledge that only a real engineer can do with firsthand know-how.

My wife and I both look forward to Mr. Cortes's next novel - The Prisoner - due out this fall.

From the first page, Perfect Circle is a difficult book to put down. Half way through, you will give up trying. It has an excellent plot, interesting characters and the writing to pull them all together. I highly recommend this book.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good, fun, read, December 15, 2008
This review is from: Perfect Circle (Mass Market Paperback)
I picked this up randomly right before a road trip; 36 hours later and I am done with it. That I could not put it down says something. It was pretty entertaining and I enjoyed both the writing and the story. If you are SciFi geek like myself go pick it up.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great writing and a great story, December 3, 2008

You can't ask for more in a book. Carlos has combined great writing with great storytelling to bring a magnificent story to the readers. He has a unique ability to educate you on technical details without boring you, and I find that truly enjoyable. The story takes many twists, few of them expected, but all of them logical. Each of the characters comes to life on the pages and by the end of the book you are feeling their joys and pains. This is a book I would highly recommend!

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect Circle a Perfect Read, April 14, 2010

This review is from: Perfect Circle (Mass Market Paperback)
I can't believe I missed reviewing this. I read a while ago and really enjoyed the fast paced adventure rich in description and what I've come to know as Carlos's distinct voice. This author knows how to tell a story. He makes even the most mundane things sound interesting. I had a hard time closing the book right to the end.

I know more about drilling than I ever wanted to know after reading this book and I've learned more than I could ever have hoped to about writing. I have never been to the Congo in my life but this book brought it to life before my eyes. From the vegetation to the people, I saw everything with an overwhelming clarity thanks to the brilliant imagery. I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys a good story. That's whether you enjoy science fiction or not.
