Book Description

March 22, 1993 5 - 8 years430L (What's this?)
"I'm taking you out for Father's Day," Susie tells Dad. "First we'll go for lunch." "Good," Dad says. "May I drive?" "Certainly," Susie says. She chooses the restaurant, and pretty soon Dad can see that she's filled this special day with treats--treats for both of them! When they get back home, Mom's final surprise (that isn't really a surprise at all) is a perfect ending for the perfect day.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-K-- Wide-eyed, curly-topped Susie offers to take Dad out to eat for "a perfect Father's Day" ("May I drive?," Dad asks), then to the duck pond ("You like to feed the ducks, don't you, Dad?"), then to the park ("Do you like the monkey bars?"). Clearly the perfect Father's Day requires the perfect father, and Susie's parent quite literally takes the cake. Meddaugh's balloon-colored cartoons are perfectly tuned to the spirit of the day. With more spontaneity than most made-to-order picture books, this is an engaging family portrait and a winning tribute to "Dad." --Marcia Hupp, Mamaroneck Public Library, NY

Review

"It's Father's Day, and four-year-old Susie has planned a perfect outing with all the things she knows her dad will like the best. . . . Bunting's simple, witty text sketches a warm father-daughter relationship and affectionately glances at the four-year-old mind at work. Meddaugh's bright watercolors and pencil illustrations add to the humor as they show the two enjoying the day but with clearly differing levels of energy and points of view." Booklist, ALA

5.0 out of 5 stars The perfect book for the perfect day. June 10, 1999
By A Customer
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I gave this book to my father for father's day. It tells the charming story of a young girl and the relationship she has with her father. She wants to spend Father's Day with her Dad doing all the things he loves. Instead they do the things she loves to do and like every good Dad he goes along and pretends they are his favorite things too. It seems like he's thinking, "without her I wouldn't be celebrating this day". Any father would love to read this book to his child and cherish it as a gift.

5.0 out of 5 stars Charming and funny June 25, 2009
Format:Paperback
I love this book! I always check books out of the library first to see if they meet my criteria for reading to my 4 y o daughter, and very few of them I end up buying- this one I will be buying. A spunky girl in shorts and a t-shirt plans and executes a day-long outdoor active adventure. The illustrations are hilarious - you can read the mind of the cat and the dad, who are peacefully relaxing until the energetic child arrives. I love how the dad acts in this book- very patient and loving, just BEING with his daughter, and I love his floral shirt! It just doesn't get any better than this. Thank you Eve Bunting and Susan Meddaugh!

5.0 out of 5 stars A great book and a yearly tradition October 7, 2012
Format:Paperback
Since I was a young girl, my father read this to me every year on Father's Day. It was our favorite book, especially since I could empathize with the daughter's innocent self-centered demeanor. Once I could read, I would read it to him every Father's Day. It became a tradition that lasted many, many years. I'm 23 now and out on my own, but I still have this tucked away in my bookshelf. A Perfect Father's Day will always have a special place in my heart.
