Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

The good old B-movie flame burns bright in A Perfect Getaway, David Twohy's rip-snorting guessing game about a vacation gone very, very bad. It must have sounded nice in the planning stages: an isolated honeymoon trek to a remote beach on Kauai, with nothing but backpacks, Hawaiian breezes, and the occasional pleasant encounter with a fellow wayfarer on the hiking trail. That was the plan for newlyweds Cliff and Cydney, anyway, before a shocking murder in Honolulu, the night before the hike, raised the red flag of suspicion. What we're left with is six couples on a lonely trail in paradise, a murderer (but probably two murderers), and a great deal of anxiety. Cliff and Cydney are played by Steve Zahn and Milla Jovovich; Timothy Olyphant and Kiele Sanchez are a pair of friendly but vaguely disturbing trailmates; Chris Hemsworth and Marley Shelton are a downright creepy couple who won't go away. Twohy has a knack for infectious concepts (see also Pitch Black and The Arrival) and this one is grabby; he's also got a mysterious ability to play the premise straight yet somehow have a great deal of fun with it (for instance, there's much trail talk about the rules of screenwriting, which comes across as playful rather than clumsily self-conscious). The casting works, even if it's difficult for Milla Jovovich to seem in danger from anybody else in the world. Timothy Olyphant is the standout, as a former Special Ops soldier whose survival skills are impressive-bordering-on-scary. Although the film is undeniably built as a whodunit, worry less about the big "reveal" than about having a good time with fun pulp material. Come to think of it, though, the reveal is well played too. --Robert Horton

Product Description

Milla Jovovich, Steve Zahn, Timothy Olyphant and Kiele Sanchez star in this gripping suspense-thriller about an island vacation that turns deadly. Honeymooners Cliff (Zahn) and Cydney (Jovovich) are hiking a jungle trail to a remote Hawaiian beach when they hear that police have uncovered a grisly murder scene and the suspected killers are somewhere nearby. Unsure whether to stay or flee, the pair joins two other couples and things start to go horribly wrong. Far from civilization, a brutal battle for survival begins where danger lurks along every twist of the path and no one is who they seem. From director David Twohy comes the suspenseful film critics call, “a clever, heart-pounding thriller” (Peter Hartlaub, San Francisco Chronicle).

4.0 out of 5 stars I'm just difficult to kill...I guess October 30, 2009
By Shopper
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
"I'm just difficult to kill, I guess..." - as soon as one of the main characters of A Perfect Getaway utters these words, you KNOW someone will try to prove him wrong. And they DO (try ;o) ). The story seems simple at first: a couple is honeymooning in Hawaii, while news spreads thru the Islands of a brutal murder of another newlywed couple. The suspected murderers, a man and a woman, are still at large and likely still in Hawaii. As our city-dwellers hike thru the Park, alone and out of their element, can they trust the strangers with whom they inevitably cross paths? (OF COURSE, NOT!) And that's when an interesting twist takes this story from predictable to... well... no spoilers here! ;o)

I did not have high hopes for this flick...I went to see it mainly because I have a secret crush on Milla Jovovich (if I were a lesbian, Milla and Mariska Hargitay from Law and Order would be my dream dates ;-P...). Was the film perfect? No. Nonetheless, to my utmost surprise, I enjoyed this thriller far more then I did many supposed "blockbusters" this year. It had some laughs, but was also quite unnerving, tense, and creepy with a light sprinkling of gore: everything a good thriller should have on offer. There were signs from the audience that I was not alone in my enjoyment. However, the film did develop its creep factor slowly as the initial 45 minutes were devoted mainly to character development. The story needed time before it graduated from "fluff" to "nail biter". It worked for me. In the end, I felt the super plot twist more then made up for the wait!

Two names are worth mentioning (in addition to Jovovich): it was the first time I saw Steve Zahn competently playing a complex "grown up" character, a role totally different from the usual "doofus" types he seems to favour.

5.0 out of 5 stars "OutStanding" May 29, 2010
Format:DVD
I have watched this movie 4 times now and always catch something I missed the previous time.
When I heard there was a twist I guessed it just by watching the Trailer.
That being said ,it didn't matter it was still a great action film.Nick played by Timothy Olyphant being the stand out with the most interesting character. His famous line "Outstanding" is priceless as is his girlfriend Gina played by Kiele Sanchez's "WooptiTa".Whether they're catching and gutting wild goats for dinner or taking a relaxing nude swim under the waterfall while sharing Nick's wild stories of survival that sound like they could be from an Indiana Jones movie to Nick pretending to leave his drink in a jewelery store so he can go back and buy an engagement ring for Gina,I fell in love with them.
A first rate thriller with a first rate cast,Mila Jovovitch always shines and Steve Zahn is cast against type but pulls it off really well.I think the reason I am able to watch this movie so many times and not get bored or it become mundane, is because I feel as I made a friend in a couple of the characters and want to revisit them and this of course is the only way for me to achieve this.
The battle for survival at the end of the movie is edge of your seat tense and exciting.Even if you guess the twist there are still some surprises they pull out,so just when you think you know how it will end ,you don't.
All in all a winner for start to finish.

4.0 out of 5 stars Lots of fun January 18, 2010
Format:DVD
At first I was worried about the gore level (not for me, for the rest of the audience) as hinted at by other reviews, but it's really minimal. And this is a fun thrill ride of a film, with a doozy of a twist. I guessed it halfway through, but you might enjoy it more if you don't - and even if you do, the exposition is still interesting. Likeable characters you can root for, a decent script, better acting than you might expect, a twisted plot and great action towards the end make this a movie to enjoy.

4.0 out of 5 stars Suspense slowly played out. May 6, 2011
Format:DVD
Being that I like Tim Olyphant I put this on my list and I'm glad I did! The movie moves slowly to build the suspense of who the murderers are. It introduces several couples that you think might fit the bill then at the end, whoa! It kept me guessing and changing my mind and even after the movie was over I kept going over some scene's! My husband and I really enjoyed this one!

4.0 out of 5 stars Impresive movie April 2, 2011
Format:DVD
Maybe it's because I have VERY low expectations going into this movie, but I was actually pleasantly surprised. The movie is about a couple on a honeymoon to Hawaii when a horrible murder takes place. They plan a hike in a remote part of the island & they run into a few other couples and they all wonder if the other couple is the killers. This movie has an awesome surprising twist at the end and leaves you guessing the whole way through. I'm a fan and would definately recommend this movie.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Perfect Getaway December 18, 2011
Format:DVD
Finally, a thriller whose roots stem from something other than the Saw legacy. Director David Twohy, the mind behind the less cohesive Pitch Black and Riddick films, gives us a fully realized and nearly impeccable who-dun-it joy ride.

Anchored by committed actors and actresses that bounce off of one another flawlessly, Jovovich, Olyphant and, especially, Zahn, are in pitch perfect form, abiding by the peculiar idiosyncrasies of their characters. Their surprisingly limber chemistry makes every scene a joy to watch unfold.

It's a dense, taut, and undeniably original film that abides by classic Hollywood ingredients, refusing to appeal to an industry saturated by an excess of torture porn and nihilistic horror. If you're tired of feeling drained and deflated subsequent to your viewings of the next big scare-fest, this is a movie for you. It's charm will make you smile ear to ear. Too often do pretentious visionaries forget their audience along the arduous path towards ambiguous, avant garde cinema. You may understand me, then, when I say that Perfect Getaway is a film that gives a lot and expects nothing from the audience that may detract from their unabashed enjoyment.

Gleefully clever, quietly stylish, and filled a giddy tension that will keep you both exhilarated and unsettled, Perfect Getaway is the best thriller of the year. This movie is just a ton of fun.
