In this book, McCall Smith gives us three stories about food, but particularly about people. All three stories relate to helping people and the ethics of behavior in doing so. The first story is about a hamburger restaurant that is going out of business due to competition from a chain hamburger restaurant. Smith tells the story of a young boy who helps the owner stay in business and create the perfect hamburger.

The second story is about a spaghetti manufacturer, but once again, Smith penchant for ethics is fully in evidence. He talks about proper food consumption, and how two children relate to their aunt with whom they are living.

The third story is about how some children help a school janitor who is close to retirement and has had his car stolen. Some children help him by raising money through a series of doughnut sales. How they do accomplish this task is the point of Smith's tale.

The book is a highly wonderful children's book and is recommended to readers from ages 5 through 95.

As a seasoned, primary school teacher, I would give this children's novel very high marks for its short stories' readability, content, voice and overall philosophy that the world is a "nice" place, if those in it, behave in a heartful manner and just plain "nicely". Alexander McCall Smith's writing is always takes on philosophical musings and this set of short stories are no different from his skillful and beloved, adult series.

In these children's stories, I also liked the multi-generational characterizations, specifically how the young and old helped one another through life problems, by being open-minded, empathetic and mutually problem-solving. The scenarios and plots are based in not-always-normal situations and settings. Typically, McCall Smith uses twists of fate and plots to make these somewhat quirky stories fun, interesting and entertaining for child and adult alike.

If you have not read any of Alexander McCall Smith's other adult series: The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency, set in Botswana, Africa; The Sunday Philosophy Club, the Isabel Dalhousie series, set in Edinburgh; The 44 Scotland Street, home of long-suffering but stalwart, wee Bertie, also set in Edinburgh; plus the Professor von Igelfeld, the absent-minded, German linguists professor series, set in Heidelburg, Germany...well, start now. You're in for a literary treat. Smith's adult writing is extremely skillful with magnificent language and a sort of philosophical sleuthing into the hearts and minds of all of every reader, not to mention, the enchanting, children's characters and plots of The Perfect Hamburger and Other Delicious Stories. Enjoy them all!

As a gift, as a new volume in any library, or as new selection in the children's section of a bookstore, These short stories are sure to please.

As always, Alexander McCall Smith does not disappoint! His cleverly written short stories charm and entertain. Ah, makes me want to try that elusive perfect hamberger, with it's special ingredient! Not to mention the wonderful spaghetti at the spaghetti factory! Such adventures for those intrepid children! A great read for young and old book lovers.

Such clever stories and of course so well-written. Amazing how he can make a page-turner out of stories about hamburgers and spaghetti!! Our kids love this book and the rest of his stories (like Max & Maddie, and the Akimbo series).

I believe I already reviewed this, but if not, here it is. It is a charming book, easy for young children, and not preachy or strange as some of them are.
It arrived in time and in very good shape.
