Perfect and Pain free is Right!, June 3, 2011
This review is from: Perfect Hand Quilting Without Pain (Paperback)
A note for potential buyers: this book is printed in both Japanese and English editions. Be absolutely sure that you are ordering the edition in the language you prefer.
Liuxin Newman is a genius at both quilting and teaching. This book takes the reader through 10 steps that teach the reader how to make tiny, consistent hand quilting stitches without pain.
While the book is written using Ms Newman's thimbles (which are her original design), it can be done with any thimble that has deep dimples or a surface that grabs the needle well for pain free guiding (such as a leather surface). Don't let the lack of one of her wonderful thimbles stop you from using this book.
I have some visual impairment but Ms Newman's book made it clear to me that it's possible for me to create tinier stitches than I can actually see, because her method relies on feel and muscle control. I find it amazing and rather amusing that I can now quilt with stitches I have to use a magnifying glass to actually see, both on top and on the back.
And no, her method does not require feeling for the tip of the needle! She's clearly very adamant about avoiding any pain while quilting and that includes pricks from the needle.
Personally, I find her thimbles better than any other on the market and well worth the cost. I have both a finger cone and a thumb thimble from her, which allows me to quilt both towards and away from me. Much faster than turning the hoop! They are pricey but compared to carpal tunnel syndrome surgery, they are a bargain.

Excellent resource, June 22, 2010

Liuxin Newman's "Perfect Hand Quilting" is very well written - in English - and lavishly illustrated with photographs that show her method in close-up views. The accompanying DVD is icing on the cake.

i ordered this book knowing that the video was not included with it but found it helpful and well illustrated. I think the video would have had a better impact but all and all very good.
