5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect, as advertised! June 7, 2011
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
As a newcomer to the Jazz scene, I was particularly enthused to find this excellent collection. For most of my life I have primarily been immersed in music of the "Common Practice Period." Although I took History of Jazz during my undergraduate music degree studies, I have too long neglected this art form.

This collection of CDs represents perhaps the best, solid compilation of the most famous, original jazz recordings ranging over a wide period of jazz history. As the other reviewer mentioned the sound quality of these discs is excellent.

These discs are essentially miniaturized versions of the original LPs...with some additional bonus tracks. The front side of each disc sleeve contains the original cover art and the backside is a scaled version of the back of the LP sleeve. Unfortunately on the back, the text is almost too small to read due to the large scaling required to fit everything on the back of a CD sleeve. Each disc contains the full original album; and many of the discs contain alternate takes or versions of many of the tracks. Although I am not much interested in these alternates or recordings of rehearsals, I am sure they are of great interest to jazz enthusiasts. Hence, I believe that this collection is not only good for newcomers to jazz such as myself, but also to the well-versed jazz listeners. Of course these alternate takes can probably be found elsewhere, but it is convenient to have them side-by-side with the final album recordings.

The "40-page booklet" is in fact a 36 page listing of the discs and tracks. There are 4.5 pages of English text written by Stephane Ollivier and a French translation for the next 4.5 pages.

5.0 out of 5 stars What's Not To Like? May 5, 2011
By Landru
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I'm writing this review just so that there is at least one review - I usually don't review but I thought this item needed it! The jazz recordings in this collection are top rate - Miles Davis, Charles Mingus, Chet Baker etc. and the sound is excellent. For the present price it is under 2 dollars a CD which is such a bargain for such good music. The music dates from the 50's to the 80's and all are items in Sony/Columbia/RCA Victor's catalog along with some European issues. There's a good mix of vocal, small group, big band, be-bop, swing, cool, and fusion.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Deal Around September 18, 2011
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Great collection of Jazz CD's from the 50's to the 80's. Very nice packaging with mini lp type jackets. The included booklet contains session and bonus track information. I purchased this along with vol 2 as well as the Perfect Blues Collection. 75 discs at less then $2 each. Any Jazz fan would love this collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ridiculously great value March 5, 2012
Format:Audio CD
I have dabbled in buying jazz albums in the past and even own a few of the albums included in this collection. But when I came across this collection I bit the bullet and got the whole collection. This is great! An instant collection of classic albums. I have thoroughly enjoyed listening to these albums from start to finish and am sure that I will for years to come. Of all of my Amazon purchases over the past five years, this is the one that I feel absolutely giddy about. I'm going to order the second collection as well.

3.0 out of 5 stars Perfect Jazz Collection July 9, 2012
By G Badal
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I bought the box as a somewhat afterthought after purchasing a classical Mercury selection. For my purposes, the jazz box
contains about 10-12 cd's that I am happy to have and will rarely if ever play the remainder. At the price point not
much reason to complain though.

Addendum :
I may have been too critical for the collection based on my likes and dislikes. For someone who wants exposure
to the many facets of jazz, this collection is a great starting point and a bargain at the price. My three
star rating should be higher for other potential buyers. At least 4 or 5 stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars It Doesn't Get Any Better Than This! July 5, 2012
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
A colleague in the office first showed me her set of Perfect jazz Collection: Volume 2, so I bought this from Amazon. It has to be the best $2 per CD I have ever spent on Jazz records. Because of my age I am having difficulties reading the text on the CD covers but this does not detract from the quality and the performance of all 25 soloists or groups/combos in the set. I even think the version of Kind of Blue in this set is better than the version I already have. Some reviewers have complained about the noise on some of the tracks - hey that is the way they were recorded! Do yourself a favour and order this collection from Amazon.

...but this comes pretty darn close. Add Volume Two of the Perfect Collection, and you have some of the finest jazz ever recorded, complete with all the performance/original release details, for an incredible low price.

4.0 out of 5 stars Whose definition of perfect is this? January 26, 2013
Format:Audio CD
As a long time collector of a variety of genres, including many albums from various stages and movements within Jazz, this release caught my attention. The value of the set is undeniable whether this is your first exposure to Jazz music(s), or if you're like me, an attempt to fill some gaps in an otherwise developed collection. Sound quality and original jacket reproductions are well executed, and at $2.00 per CD you'd be hard pressed to find music this great for this cheap anywhere (excluding illegal means of course).

All of that said, if this is indeed your first foray into Jazz, a word of caution:

There are some certifiable classic albums in this set, and some very good ones besides. There are also some peculiar selections whose priority in this set is questionable at best, but understanding the way this was compiled helps to clarify. These are all Columbia and RCA/Victor recordings, so this is their definition of Perfect. It is also limited to the artists who they actually managed to record and secure the rights to. This ensures that the survey of Jazz presented completely omits free jazz and some of the less commercially oriented or mainstream Jazz, not to mention some key figures in the movements that are indeed represented here. While this stuff is subjective, I would argue that no "perfect" Jazz collection can get away with omitting Ben Webster, Dizzy Gillespie, Bud Powell, Clifford Brown, Eric Dolphy, John Coltrane (though he is on Kind of Blue), and Ornette Coleman. Mine would also extend to include Sun Ra, Albert Ayler, Archie Shepp, Cecil Taylor, Roland Kirk, Andrew Hill, Jackie Maclean and many more besides (The three disc "
