Fun but Talky Marital Farce,
By David J. Kucharski (Washington, DC USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Perfect Marriage [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Movie comedies based on stage plays generally have one flaw: there's much more talk than action. The Perfect Marriage is no exception to this rule, but the talk is enjoyable enough to keep it entertaining. (And there are also a few moments of blunt truth that may startle you!)On the day of their 10th wedding anniversary, a well-to-do young couple (Loretta Young and David Niven) complete a busy day at work, contend with meddling in-laws, and then settle down for a romantic evening together. By the end of that evening, they're heading for the divorce courts! How they manage to sort out their problems--with the help and hindrance of parents, friends, and their young daughter--provides the content of a gently amusing film. Young appears to advantage here, wearing stylish clothes (as always!) and handling her dialogue with quite a bit of snap. Niven seems less at home--he didn't fully hit his comedy stride until his peak years of stardom in the 1960s--but he still gives a solid performance. Standing out in the supporting cast is Virginia Field as the couple's acerbic yet caring friend. The Perfect Marriage isn't a classic by any means. But it's an amusing and occasionally perceptive look at the hard work of marriage. |
