Book Description

October 4, 2005

A funny and heartfelt novel of high-stakes poker, lost love and gambling on oneself, Louise Wener's The Perfect Play is the story of a woman who can find happiness only by discovering the answer to the question that has haunted her since she was eleven years old.

Playing the cards life has dealt her has left Audrey Unger anxious, obsessive and without a sense of direction. Audrey's professional poker-playing father left her and her mother behind when she was eleven, his only explanation a note that advised that "one day you'll understand this was probably for the best." Now, about to turn thirty-three and poised on the edge of her own midlife crisis -- one that has her sorting her peas into prime number groups -- Audrey makes the decision to try to find him. She's prepared to risk everything in her attempt to understand him, and to finally ask what made him choose poker over his only daughter.

Big Louie is the key to her father's gambling world -- as well as an agoraphobic, ill-tempered card genius who hasn’t left his apartment in more than two years! Fighting his own phobias, he takes Audrey on a journey of self-discovery, guiding her through the subtleties of professional poker and igniting her passion for the thrill of high-stakes gambling that her father found so alluring. Shuffling a hand that includes an overprotective boyfriend, twin magician stepbrothers and a Las Vegas con man, Audrey is propelled to a play a final game of poker that will change her life forever.

With extraordinary perception and emotional insight, Louise Wener captures the comedy, pathos and drama that mark each of our lives in this compelling page-turner that exposes the dark underworld of real Las Vegas poker. Smart, absorbing and addictive, The Perfect Play introduces a writer with an edgy and entertaining style all her own.

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

Louise Wener's The Perfect Play is the story Audrey Unger, an urbane Brit whose quest for her estranged poker-playing father takes her on a journey through the projects of London to the glitz and glamour of Las Vegas, stopping along the way to grapple with the beginnings of a mid-life crisis that only U2 front-man Bono seems to be able to cure. Brilliant with numbers, Audrey's luck changes when she meets Big Louie, a massive agoraphobic who takes her under his wing and agrees to teach her the game of poker in exchange for a window box that will remind him of what lies outside his self-made prison. Edgy, witty, and quite funny, The Perfect Play combines Chick Lit sensibilities with a healthy dose of suspense and instruction, making this a rewarding read for both men and women alike.

Piggy-backing on the popularity of poker, Wener does a laudable job of integrating the game into the very essence of Audrey's quest. Also admirable is her ability to create real relationships between her characters; when Big Louie finally comes clean with Audrey, the honesty is palpable. ("But like I said, the odds don't always go your way in the world. It's how you handle the bad bets that counts... You gotta promise me something, Audrey. I mean it. You gotta promise that you won't end up like me.") And while Audrey's growing distance from her loved ones, including her far-too-perfect boyfriend Joe, seems to resolve itself far too neatly, we've become so invested in her happiness that we're content to accept a fairy-tale ending. --Gisele Toueg --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

From Publishers Weekly

Poker is the catalyst for change in this nervy, crackling novel about a brainy 32-year-old underachiever on a quest to find her long-lost father. Audrey Ungar's boyfriend, Joe, says she's too young for a midlife crisis. "I know, but I could be dead by the time I'm sixty, in which case I'm already well behind the game." Londoner Audrey was always great at math; in life, as in cards, she perpetually calculates the odds. And after all, she's just following her father's example: when she turns 33, she'll be the age he was when he fell under the spell of card shark Jimmy Silk Socks and abandoned his beloved wife and child. Before she can make important decisions about Joe, having children or a potential career, Audrey must swim with the same sharks. A chance encounter with Big Louie, an obsessive-compulsive giant who offers poker and life lessons ("great poker isn't about being reckless, it's about being fearless"), starts her on an offbeat adventure that ends with a high-stakes poker game in Las Vegas. Emotional but never sentimental, Wener's novel is full of wisdom about luck and skill, grace and nerve, the kindness of strangers, when to play it straight and when to go for broke. And for all its heft, it's a hoot.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing!, January 6, 2005
This review is from: The Perfect Play (Hardcover)
Finished this an hour ago and had to come on here to write a review, what an excellent book. I laughed & had a few tears roll down my cheeks too. I am a Texas Hold'em player, although when I bought the book I actually didn't realize it was about poker as I didn't read the back cover. Her characters are superb, every one of them a "real" person. I really can't recommend this book highly enough, probably one of my favourites. Whether you play poker or not (for me it was just a huge bonus) this is a moving & funny book and very very well written.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Perfect Way to Spend An Evening, July 21, 2009
This review is from: The Perfect Play (Hardcover)
I enjoyed this novel about poker and gambling quite a bit. It had some genuine laugh-out-loud moments, great characters and truly terrific writing. The whole book had a very cinematic quality to it. It was a lot of fun to read and I am definitely looking forward to reading her other books!

5.0 out of 5 stars finally different than any book i ever read, July 12, 2008
This review is from: The Perfect Play: A Novel (Paperback)
I was hesitant to try this book being that i tend to stick with chick lit only and have no interest in poker. However something about the story line compelled me to try it, along with the great reviews on amazon. Reading it made me realize how sick I am of reading about the same story line over and over again and I enjoyed finally reading about something completely different, though there was still enough relataionship plots in there to keep my emotional side happy! The writing is wonderful, even got me completelty drawn in to the poker part, was even written in a way that someone like me who is completely idiotic when it comes to numbers, can understand! The whole book was completely enjoyable and I did not want to put it down!
