Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Kindergarten-Grade 3–The talented and prolific Cazet scores again. It's Halloween night, and when Mrs. Wilkerson tells her grouchy husband that there won't be any pie in the afterlife, he declares, Then I ain't goin'! Then he keels over face down in the pie pan, dead with a fork in his hand. His wife buries him in the pumpkin patch, moves away, and that's that. Or is it? Of course not. A boy and his grandmother move into the house and are visited on the next Halloween by a wonderfully earthy ghost (with a fork sticking out of his brain and a removable eyeball) who is in search of the perfect pumpkin pie. This tale makes a great read-aloud, complete with the catchy refrain: Pumpkins, pumpkins,/pumpkin pie!/I must have one/before I die./It must be round/and brown as toast,/or I'll haunt this house/a hungry ghost. The watercolor cartoons are dynamic and funny, bursting with details that kids will love (the ghost makes his exits in a swirl of chaotic lines filled with baking utensils). Even if your holiday shelves are crowded, make room for this one.–Lauralyn Persson, Wilmette Public Library, IL

From Booklist

PreS-Gr. 2. Just in time for Halloween story hours comes this tingly yarn about a cantankerous ghost in search of the perfect pie. On Halloween night, mean Old Man Wilkerson collapses into his plate while taking a bite of pumpkin pie. His wife buries him in the pumpkin patch and moves away, and young Jack and his grandmother move into the house. Their Halloween baking raises Wilkerson's ghost, which appears with "an icy wind" and demands the perfect pie: "It must be round and brown as toast, or I'll haunt this house a hungry ghost." On their third attempt, Jack and Grandmother finally appease their finicky specter. Swirling, chaotic, splattered watercolors, reminiscent of Stephen Gammel's work, create a humorous and also abhorrent ghost in Wilkerson, complete with grisly details (a detached eyeball coolly appraises finished pies), all nicely balanced with images of bossy, unflappable Grandma. A few sensitive kids may find Wilkerson's abrupt death upsetting, but most will delight in this rollicking, sometimes gruesome Halloween ghost story. For readers wanting a book about another haunted kitchen, suggest Jacqueline Ogburn's The Bake Shop Ghost (2005). Gillian Engberg

The rare children's book that both kids and adults don't mind reading over and over together.

It is beautifully illustrated and a fun book to read, especially when read aloud with animation and funny voices.

After checking this book out at least 10 times from our local library, we finally wised up and bought it.

After reading a review of this marvelous book in a parenting magazine, I looked for it at our local public library. All 3 of my kids absolutely LOVE this book. We have checked it out over 10 times so I thought I should just buy it. My kids are ages 7, 5 and 3 and it is one of our all time family favorite books hands down! It is so fun to read and the kids can't get enough. I hope Mr. Cazet writes a sequel!

Don't be fooled by the cover picture, this book is great for children and adults. The little girl (age 4) I nanny for absolutely loves it and we get a kick out of saying the "perfect pumpkin pie" rhyme together. The grandmother in the story is also an added bonus. Based upon this one book alone, I am a big fan of Cazet already. Can't wait to read some other stories of his!

My entire family loved "The Perfect Pumkin Pie." The ghost of Old Man Wilkerson comes back to haunt his old house in search of a perfect pie. Grandmother and Jack are the recipients of his ghostly and ghastly visit. It moves fast and the art is like the pie - "perfect." Anyone who doesn't think this book is hilarious is as dead as Old Man Wilkerson.

I have three children and they love this book. We read it over and over, and I laugh just as hard. When other kids come over they get it out and say, "You have got to read this!" It is so clever.

My 5-year-old son heard this story at a library Halloween party. It scared him. He has Asperger's Syndrome, and he was fixated on the story for a week. He became mopey and sad, which isn't like him. When I would tell people about the story, they thought it was awful and didn't understand why it was read to a group of young children. Some kids may find it entertaining, but my son did not like it at all. Just be aware if you have a child that is easily affected by the gross drawings and scary concepts presented in this story. It is certainly not for everyone.

This book is not only enjoyable for the listener, but fun to read too. That's saying something about a children's book. My 2 year old grandson and my 2 year old nephew both recite pieces of this book as if it were a song. My grandson has the book nearly memorized even though it's long enough that it takes me about 15 minutes to read it to him.

The story line is phenomenal. The illustrations are very well done and are complicated enough to keep the child looking at the book day after day.

My kids and I LOVE this book. It's a bit "different" than your typical children's book. But, it's brilliant! It's a delightful way to introduce storytelling as your children (and you!) can practice with giving voices and inflection to the various characters/scenes. After checking this book out at least 10 times from our local library, we finally wised up and bought it. I couldn't be happier with the product or the vendor.
