Thank you Gwen Bailey! I am a dog trainer and a volunteer at the local shelter and I am forever being asked for ONE book on puppy training - and now I've found it. This book has a wealth of information including stages of maturity and what to expect, prevention of the most common problems, and best of all a Positive based training method. These are the methods I have been using in teaching my students and they are a real joy - and they work. A must-have book for puppy owners and trainers.

We bought this book when we adopted a puppy. The ideas were very well-thought out and well-written, easy to understand. I read this book over and over and wondered why my puppy was still behaving like a maniac, very few of the techniques worked. I began to question myself, thinking I could not understand the simple techniques written about in this book.

We hired a trainer. When he came to the house he saw "The Perfect Puppy" sitting on our coffee table, and mentioned that he thought it was a great book....... just not for us!!! He explained that the book was written about more submissive breeds (ie Golden Retreiver), we adopted a puppy made up of 2 very dominant breeds. At least I figured out that I wasn't crazy after all!

I'll keep the book around and definitely pass it on to anyone I know who will be getting a puppy. I'm very disappointed that it didn't work, because as I said, it was well-written and easy to understand. I hope it benefits someone else.

I found this book extremely helpful after just a few minutes of reading (learning that some of my methods were wrong and improving the ones that were right). The author's experience with puppies is clear once you implement some of their techniques and receive positive results.

The book gives you simple training ideas (such as using a pen in combination with a create). It also helps you get inside the head of your puppy (Alfa role's etc.). Understanding your puppy's reasons for their behavior makes training fun (as I'm sure you know by now).

I'm giving this book a five star rating due to its simplicity and the results I received. I would recommend to anyone with a puppy or planing on a puppy to also buy more than one book and watch animal planet for other helpful tips (I also found the videos by Matthew Margolis informative and entertaining).

Excellent book. Very helpful and informative. Gets to the point about what you should and should not do. Clear directions (with explanations why) for raising a well behaved happy puppy.

Great advice on how to deal with two puppies or raising a puppy when you already have a dog. Has step-by-step photos on how to teach those crucial skills like loose-leash-walking, and coming when called, potty training, crate training. Bases training on positive reinforcement so you can begin training your dog months before traditional methods would be appropriate. i also recomment any clicker training book you can get your hands on.

I am a professional dog trainer, and this is the puppy book that I reccommend to my clients as well as on my website. Clearly written, positive instructions guide you through the process of raising the perfect puppy.

Gwen Bailey is a true life saver! Her knowledge of raising and training puppies makes this book an excellent companion for every new puppy owner. Beautifully illustrated, this book offers step by step instructions for everything from housetraining to managing puppy adolescence. I was lucky enough to interview Gwen for a magazine article when she was visiting Australia as a guest of the New South Wales Animal Welfare League. I'm not impressed by many people but I fell for Gwen immediately and have embraced her books just as readily. Her compassionate and intelligent, no-nonsense and no pandering to politics approach means she just has the best interests of dogs at heart, spelling it out for us humans in a way that is very uplifting. All dog owners want to do the best by their dogs. Gwen's books give us a very simple user-friendly method to do our best. Even experienced dog people will appreciate the way she conveys information. I keep a copy of her books close at hand and frequently refer to them. A must have for all new or potential owners, or owners who want a fresh slant on their relationship with their dog.

This book is packed with valuable information about puppy development and dog behavior that helps people understand their new friends. You may want to have another training manual handy, however, as several of the author's techniques for teaching basic commands did not work with my puppy. Dogs do not always respond the way Ms Bailey unequivocally claims they will.

This is a great book if you are looking for general information about a puppies development. I found it very helpful with having a new puppy but I can see that it will continue to help with training and guiding throughout my dogs life. A very good, informative book.
