Useless and inaccurate!,
This review is from: Perfect Pushup Counter (Sports)
I am in the military so I thought the perfect counter would be great to train for our 2 minute pushup drills. This product is anything but perfect. My perfect counter turns off in the middle of the 2 minutes. Also it doesn't count every repetiton. My chest will hit the perfect counter and it won't count that rep for some reason. It's easier just to count yourself or have someone else count for you.

It could have been a great device.,

Positives: ----------- 1.) Great construction. 2.) Sensitive to light touch. 3.) Does enforce proper motion. Negatives: ---------- 1.) They got the counting functionality *ALL WRONG* making the device near useless. When I stumbled upon this product browsing a sports store the other day, I was amazed at it and thought it could just be my perfect pushup buddy. Using it however immediately killed that amazement. My problem with doing pushups is that I lose count and engaging my not so interested girlfriend to count for me just amounts to her not counting loud enough, not counting at all, or knowingly giving the wrong count just to make me do more pushups than I intended. "Perfect Pushup Counter" to the rescue. Or so I though. Now if you consider how most people approach pushups or how most people refer to pushups, it is one of the following: 1.) Your personal trainer or your team coach tells you to do XYZ pushups. 2.) You tell yourself to do XYZ pushups repeated in XYZ number of sets. 3.) You tell your friend that you can do 100 pushups and he tells you Bruce Lee could do 1000. I am trying to relay to you, that what is interesting in pushups (or strength training in general) is the number of repetition ("reps") or the number of "reps" and "sets" combined. The point is, when you train pushups you commit to a number of pushups and the only thing you want to make sure, is that you REACH THAT NUMBER. Hence a natural and fair expectation of the "Perfect Pushup Counter" would be to: A.) Count reps, B.) Count sets and (keep reps in memory) C.) Be able to set a goal of X reps and perform a countdown and then give a signal as the goal is reached. "Perfect Pushup Counter" does nothing of the above (see explanation). The device DOES count pushups but it does not count downwards from a given number nor does it count up to a given goal. Instead it just counts. This might have been fine had you been able to read the count as you engage in pushups, but since the device is under your chest and the display is small, there is no way to know "where you are at" or how much is left. Instead the "Perfect Pushup Counter" uses a configurable timer and you can assess (after set completion) how many reps you did within the time-frame set. This is mostly useless. I will tell you why. Counting pushups within a specific time scope is not good from a exercise perspective as it will only amounts to poorly executed repetitions and will build less muscle compared to performing the motion in a slower and controlled fashion.

Counts pushups...,

The product does what it says it will do... it counts your pushups. I like it a lot. You don't get a pushup counted unless you get all the way down which prevents me from "cheating". It's good encouragement on form. Overall, I am really happy with it!

It's not perfect...but what is,
This review is from: Perfect Pushup Counter (Sports)
I purchased this on sale at a major sporting goods store for a slightly lower price. Once again I bought another heart breaker. I thought I was doing the perfect push ups with correct form and doing about 30 reps (I am an old guy and that isn't bad). When I bought the counter and used it; it enforced a stricter style (much lower for each rep) and I am suddenly down to 16 on good days. But while my pride took a hit I believe I am getting better results with the lower push up. When I get it back up to 30 and beyond then it will be justifiably impressive.
Special Note: If you want to get maximum results from the perfect pushup/counter combo move it up to the midpoint in your chest well above the abs. If you drop it further toward your mid section your pushups won't be as deep so your count will be more impressive but your results will be less so. Update: I have been using the perfect push-up device religously since the first review. I can now do over fifty without pause (and I can do multiple sets of 40 - 50) and my arms have an inch more girth (using the push ups and combined with an old school device called the powertwister). I even bought a second one for my den so I can do a few unscheduled push up sessions. Because I have had such great results I have raised the star rating from 4 to 5. And it has consistently dropped in price, because people don't understand that it not only counts but it enforces form discipline. Buy it, and use it. It will help you immeasuarbly.

This product is excellent, brought two others as gifts.
Used it to train for my fitness test. It allowed me to train alone, concentrate on my form and not waste my energy/breath counting out loud. When test day came, my training took over, and viola! Max score.

The Perfect counter works PERFECTLY!,

I'm active duty military and have been using this device since November 2010. I took an annual physical fitness assessment test and failed simply based on poor pushup form. I excelled in all other aspects: sit-ups, run, height/weight and abdominal measurement. With GENUINE effort, DAILY use of this counter in tandem with the PERFECT PUSHUP hand devices, I retook my test and went from an "UNSAT" to an "EXCELLENT" in under 45 days! I won't lie, if used alone without the hand devices you won't dip down low enough to break a 90 degree plane with your elbows, but used together with the extra elevation this item works PERFECTLY! The counter is aproximately 4/5 inches tall and works great centered on the ground for your chest to touch it. It is sensitive, so rough movement on the ground can give false numbers, but on a gym floor mat or carpet it works without fail. It has several countdown modes: 2 minute drills, 1 minute drills. IT WILL HELP YOU GET INTO SHAPE!! I've recommended it to my corowkers and now we do pushups in the office! (Also, try getting your butt off the couch and put down the bacon double cheeseburger. FATTY!)

So, one day I was on Amazon buying something different; and, I saw this thing... I said, "sure.. whatever, it's cheap!" I got it on-time, and packaged well. When I first opened this and examined it, I quickly realized I had crumpled up some cash and thrown it in the dumpster out-back. It's a one dollar stop watch with a very small display window, housed in a rubber/plastic form, which presses the button on the stopwatch/counter whenever you depress the grey circle of rubber/plastic. I thought, "okay whatever." I used it for one day; and yes, it counted every time my chest/sternum depressed the grey circle-thing. The second day, I broke it somehow... how I do not know. Note, I can only do 50-60 push-ups in one set -- so, it's not like I wore this thing down... Anyway, it remained broke after close examination of the parts... and, then it went to the trash bin. I wasn't going to the trouble of mailing this thing back to Amazon, for just a few bucks worth of refund. I advise you not to buy this.

It's funny this seems like something absolutely unnecessary; however, it is greatly helpful in performing the 2 minute drills.

The perfect push up counter works only if you have the perfect push up grips. the counter sits too high and you can cheat by tagging the counter. Counter does what it says but you need the perfect push up as well. Remember to get both for it to work properly.
