This review is from: Perfect Results Presents: Kel Spencer's Salon Stories Hosted By MC Lyte (Audio CD)
This is probably my favorite Kel Spencer album. If you haven't checked his other work, please do so. The Streets Know That, Who Is Kel Spencer?, and Brooklyn Spartans are all dope albums. Kel has proven himself to be one of Hip-Hop's most intellegent, postive, and consistent emcees. He's also responcible for co-writing some of Will Smith's music (the hit single "Switch" is one of the many songs they've collaborated on).

The album is laced with interviews with MC Lyte and commentary by females. The ideas and advice he shares during these interviews may be eye openers for men and woman. These aren't your typical, pointless Hip-Hop album skits. You'll actually listen to these over and over again.

"Uggs To Hugs" is the opening track and 1st single. The straight Hip-Hop meets classic neo-soul sound is flawless and has a timeless sound to it. The subject matter has Kel beautifully capturing the magic of a new relationship. The R-N-B hook adds some sugar to the mix.

"Eye On You" is an interesting 'Hip-Hop meets the Club' joint. Kel's flow has an old school vibe to me. At first, I wasn't feeling this song much but over time I started likeing it more and more.

"Adam's Rib / Look Atcha" may be my favorite song on the album. "Adam's Rib" has Kel peforming a spoken word piece about love from a spiritual point of view. The song "Look Atcha" has Kel just stunned and in awe about a female. Simple concept but the lyrics tie with the raw and honest feelings that go with experiencing that concept.

"Shine All Day" has Kel Spencer collaborating with Q-Tip and Grandmaster Flash on a feel-good and boucy Hip-Hop joint. Another song based on love.

"Questions Questions" is another spoken word piece that is very funny. On top of the rhyme scheme, it has male and female going back and forth in a semi argument that points fun and very universal stereotypes between the sexes. Hilarious stuff.

For listeners feening for a banger, "Murderer" will serve up the goods. It's dripping with swagga.

"My Brother's Keeper" is a smoothed out summery Hip-Hop joint that touches on the topic of meeting and searching for approval in your significant other's family and friends. Kel's actually family is on the track giving it that extra foot in reality. The concept and subject matter is creative on this one.

"Know The Truth" has a unique and hauting sound that deals with insecurities in relationships.

I'm not going to go over every song and skit on the album. This album will mean something different to each listener. I strongly suggest this album to anyone who is not satisfied with the garbage that gets play on urban radio. As an emcee, Kel Spencer brings everything that it takes to be a real emcee. His voice, flow, and delivery are tight. He isnt' lazy and unmotivated on the mic. When it comes to lyrics and subject matter, Kel keeps thing creative, deep, funny, and postive. He also doesn't cuss in his rhymes so you brain isn't gonna get filled with negativity, explicit, and innapropriate subject matter. This is an album you can listen to with kids in the car. Most of all, Kel Spencer has heart. Kel Spencer has wisdom. These days, heart and wisdom is a hard thing to come by in Hip-Hop and Rap. Kel Spencer is the best rapper you've never heard. Fix that and pick up this album. Lastly, don't think that this is a one dimentional album about love. The sound of the album goes just about everywhere. And while the subject matter is based in love, he tackles the topic from every angle, in different ways. Each song is different. Hip-Hop lives!
