THIS IS AN OK BOOK,

This review is from: Perfect Sin (Mass Market Paperback)
I generally like Martin's works, but this book was extremely flat. Like the previous readers, I also felt that the mistress Martin threw at the end was uncalled for and just ruined the book for me. The wife discovers her husband with the mistress as she searches for him. I want romance not infidelity. Take a pass on the book.

love+passion+island magic= Great Romance!,
This review is from: Perfect Sin (Mass Market Paperback)
Perfect Sin, Kat Martin's latest book, is one of the best she's ever written. Rand Clayton, the Duke of Beldon, immediately falls in love upon hearing the sensual, feminine laughter of a stunning American redhead at a glamorous ball. Her name is Caitlin Harmon and she is the devoted daughter of Professor Harmon, an archaeologist who's spent most of his life searching for the most valuable and elusive ancient treausre of that time: Cleopatra's necklace. It turns out that Caitlin and her father are in England to seek patrons to finance their journey to the exotic but hostlie Santo Amaro Island off the coast of Africa, where the necklace is rumored to be buried. This book is excellent. The passion ALWAYS burns hot and heavy between Cait and Rand. Their love and powerful attraction towards one another keeps the story flowing smoothly and makes their characters come to life. The sultry backdrop of the exotic Santo Amaro island is also a refreshing new setting where Cait and Rand are able to test the limits of their passion. However, Perfect Sin has a couple of extremely sad and disturbing moments that are not evident in other Kat Martin books, but Cait and Rand always manage to keep hope alive with their awesome romance and love. This romance was so well written that I found myself absolutely captivated with the man Rand becomes towards the end of the book. Every woman who reads this would fall completely in love with Rand, especially after what happens on the island under the "X" trees. Want to know what happens next? Buy the book and find out! I guarantee you won't be disappointed.

Not as good as some of her earlier books...,
This review is from: Perfect Sin (Mass Market Paperback)
Randall Clayton, the Duke of Beldon falls for Cait Harmon. When she becomes pregnant he is forced to marry her. He can't admit how deeply he cares for her so when she loses their child he rekindles an old affair with his ex-mistress. He soon comes to his senses and realizes that he truly loves his "Caitie" but it is too late. She has discovered him with his mistress and leaves him. She joins her father in Africa where he is searching for a lost necklace. Rand quickly realizes just what his inability to admit his feelings has cost him and journey's to Africa to try and convince Cait to give him another chance. But he realizes that it's not as easy as that....love isn't the problem..trust is. Can he ever get Cait to trust him enough to restart their marriage? I have always loved Kat Martin's historical romances but her last two(including this one) have left a little to be desired. Although I like Rand and Cait and the story sucks you in, I had a problem with the infidelity storyline. I like a story that makes you feel good but the affair left me feeling disappointed. I also felt like Ms. Martin wrapped up the book to easy. I was left feeling as if things ended too quickly and easily. I am hoping her next book will be more like her older romances such as Gypsy Lord(great one!)

Lots of Sin Here - PreMarital Sex, Baby Out of Marriage, Adultrey and more....,
By Bridget "B.A.D.T." (Grand Rapids, Michigan) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Perfect Sin (Mass Market Paperback)
I recently reviewed a few other books by Kat Martin - Innocence Undone, The Devils Necklace and Wicked Promise. I gave so-so reviews to the first two and then four stars to the last one. This book, Perfect Sin, is the follow up to Wicked Promise so, you should read that one first. Trust me...it will be well worth it as it was the best so far. This story, Perfect Sin, is the story about Rand Clayton and Cait Harmon. Rand was in Wicked Promise as the best friend of main hero Nick Warring. Rand was a dashing and kind and loyal friend in the first book and shows up in his own story this time. He is a high ranking duke with a long and well known family lineage. He is due to marry as it's time but, he isn't ready and has found no one suitable for a wife. He plays the field and enjoys the life that a high ranking member of society is allowed in his position. He meets up with our main leading lady Cait Harmon, an American in England who is with her family drumming up support and money to do further archeological excavations for a missing treasure known throughout the ages as Cleopatra's Necklace. Rand hears Cait's laughter first and is drawn in before he ever sees her. When he does lay eyes on her...it's instant attraction between the two of them. Although I enjoyed this book quite a bit and was certainly interested in hearing Rand's story...it wasn't quite up to snuff as Nick and Elizabeth's story was in Wicked Promise. As appealing as I found Rand early on...(as we got to know him in the previous book), I did not find Cait very deep or well developed. I actually didn't think there was a lot to her besides loyalty to her father and sexual desire for Rand. This second story was still filled with lots of adventure, passion and betrayal. But...I almost think this one went a little over-board on these things, especially the betrayal section. The story started off well and I enjoyed their getting to know and becoming intimate with one another. Unfortunately, I felt their interaction happened a bit soon for me and then they go their separate ways as he is not ready to settle down and she is off to help her father at all costs. I almost felt the author took this independence the two had a bit too far. I felt their coming together and then parting was a bit much...they didn't want to leave but, did nonetheless. Clearly the author did this so, they could end up missing each other desperately while apart but, I thought this action was too dramatic and could have been written better. Rand and Cait find each other again while she is with her father in Africa on a dig & search mission again and pregnant with his child. A friend disclosed this secret to Rand and he properly came to claim her as his own and take her and the baby back to England to be a family. Which they did - albeit reluctantly on Cait's part as she didn't want Rand rushed into anything he wasn't ready for. While their relationship grew leaps and bounds once they married and were getting set for the baby's birth...the story fell apart for awhile after Cait looses the baby. She and Rand fall away from each other in grief and he heads back to London to return to his old rowdy and raunchy ways and he leaves her at the family estate to mourn and find her way back alone. Instead of the loss bringing them closer - it drove them apart. That was unfortunate. I almost gave up on the book when Rand took up with his old mistress Hannah. I was sorely disappointed that the author would not only have him try to drown his sorrows and loss in booze, outings and gambling but, that he could actually take up fully with an old mistress and leave Cait on the side. I lost faith in our hero and he seemed tainted and stained at that point. Almost irrevocable so - he crossed the line of infidelity and that's not one to cross back upon easily. Other readers seemed to find this a serious "hitting a wall point" as much as I did. I felt Cait's hurt when she came back to the living after loosing the child and made a decision to help Rand finish healing so, they could be a family again. Only her attempts fell flat when she found him in London with his mistress and he didn't deny what he had been doing. She wisely left and went back to her father to return to her old life before she met Rand, try to forget him and their past and begin a new life away from England. I was glad Rand spent months coming to terms with the loss of Cait a second time. He deserved to be put through the wringer knowing he did wrong by leaving her after the loss of their son, taking up his old sinful ways and going outside his marriage with a mistress to drown his heartache and not come to terms with how much he truly adored and loved his wife. For a sensitive man - as the author made him out to be - it took awhile for him to see himself and his emotions for what they were and make good on them. He was hurt, sad, miserable and disgusted with himself for the level he allowed himself to sink to. He beat himself up enough and with the help of wise friends, realized his mistake didn't have to be for a lifetime. He rose to the challenge to become a better man for himself and above all, for the woman he realized he adored, Cait. Rand of course redeemed himself by ending his old life and searching out Cait and not giving up on her even when she wanted no part of him the second time. He fought tooth and nail to win her back and did it the only way he could - standing loyal, barring his heart, never giving up on her, helping out her father and keeping them safe. He also was important in finding the mystery necklace that was no longer just an adventure tale told over the years. Rand almost lost his life trying to gain her favor back but, by giving everything up for Cait and giving it his all, he gained back her trust and love. The love scenes between the two was hot and steamy - much like earlier novels. The descriptions detailed and passionate. Always on course and ever tasteful. I never felt that the outings were too much or out of context. They made sense and fit in well to the action scenes at hand. Their sexual connection was clear early on. Although the author tried to make their love seem "deep" much of their relationship felt sexual and attraction based. It did have touches of emotion to it so, it was not just sex. But...I think it will take time for their "love" to properly mature to a level they both need for it to be strong and last a lifetime and not just for a few months or a few years. We won't be there to read about this but, clearly by the stories end....they were finally on their way. I would certainly recommend this book. Although there were some plot line drawbacks to this story that was not in Wicked Promise, the author did a fine job of getting the main character to cleanse his naughty soul and find a way to win back his leading lady with honesty, truth and a desire to only do better in the future. Some heroes who cross the line as Rand did would never be redeemed. You believe in Rand again at the end as does Cait and that makes this a worthwhile read. We all wish he wouldn't have cheated but, without a re-write...the ending cleaned up as much as it could. Enjoy the two stories - Rand and Nick - they are both worth it!

Infidelity is NOT okay,
By Laura Evans (AVON, IN USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Perfect Sin (Mass Market Paperback)
I thought this book was alright and then I got to the part where the author graphically describes a sex scene with the (at this point in the book) married duke and his former mistress--YUK, HORRIBLE! First off it was graphic, awful when it isn't the heroine and second, it was infidelity. This might be realistic of the aristocracy, but I don't read romance novels for realistic, I read them for romance and this completely turned me off. It ticked me off so much I literally threw the book away. I have a no tolerance policy for infidelity. And why she began to trust him again after this? I have no idea and the author didn't convey this very clearly at all. A few scenes of "his" pain b/c he betrayed her in such a way and then (of course) a near death experience and suddenly there is love, trust and the book ends. This is not indicative of Kat Martin, so I wouldn't write this author off, but DO NOT READ THIS BOOK!

Another Good Read,

I am a sucker for follow ups - spin offs - etc., I enjoy characters that have been introduced in one book and his [or her] story is in a follow up -- such was Rand Clayton, Duke of Beldon - tantalizingly introduced in Wicked Promise and his story was spun out in Perfect Sin [of course for which he paid]-- I really like finding out the progress of the characters from the previous books, as I did like Nicholas Warring----- As for Caitlin, she bombed out with all of the other females. The story was intriguing and not boring or dull -- The Villians -- not to be underestimated but [chuckle, chuckle] they did bite the dust. Altogether, worth reading again!

couldn't put the book down until infidelity slowed me a bit,

This review is from: Perfect Sin (Mass Market Paperback)
I was devouring the book until Rand runs back to his mistress. I almost stopped reading the book altogether. Although after he was caught he admitted his love for Cait and proceeds to try and win her back. I read romance for the fantasy that a man can be faithful (not like reality - which has proven infidelity a norm) I want the main character to show some power over his desire for other women once he meets the heroine. I am not of the school that believes once a man cheats he can then see the error of his ways and become faithful. If Cait was my friend no matter if Rand risked his life for her or not I would have told her to not go back to him. I did finish the book because I did enjoy it and I did like the characters except for that one part. It was a good read if a little off putting.

Infuriating romance - Do not buy.,

I'm only writing this review right now because this terrible, God awful, I wished I never wasted my time spending a penny on, has a 4 stars over-all rating. I strongly disagree, giving this book 1 star would be generous.
I don't hate all books with cheating. I firmly believe that if the author is talented enough, they can pull off any plot line, however, this author didn't pull it off here. The hero is a cheating bastard. The heroine is weakling for taking him back. The book itself is mediocre at best. Go ahead, waste your money.

Flawed but enjoyable,

Martin breaks one of the romance taboos in this book -- infidelity. That is the make-or-break point for many readers. I was disappointed with Rand for that, but he eventually won me over. At that point, it was like a second book; everything seemed to start over.
The whole search for the necklace was a little hokey, and the dangers in the search were glaringly obvious. Another problem was that the sex scenes were sometimes gratuitous and emotionally superficial. Rand seemed to think that sex was all he needed to win Cait -- and it was all too often true. All of that makes the book less than satisfying. Nevertheless, there are good moments, and I certainly want to go back and read Nicholas Warring's book. When you add the pros and cons together, it's an average book, and Ms. Martin is usually better than that.

Engaging,
By Abbys (Moreno Valley, CA United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Perfect Sin (Mass Market Paperback)
The back description of this book didn't actually draw me in. An American Adventurer for a heroine didn't sound appealing to me but I was captivated by Randall, Duke of Beldon in WICKED PROMISE. I was very glad to know he has a story of his own, so this is the real reason why I got this book. Good decision, I say... Not only is the plot engaging, Rand and Caitlin's love story was a heart warming one. I was surprise to specially enjoy Caitlin's character because of my clouded first impression of her as an American Adventurer. I actually like her dependency, her intelligence, her devotion to her father and her work. I also love the way she reacts to Randall. She is in innocently in love with him yet she never losses her pride. Randall's character was consistent in WICKED PROMISE. He's handsome, nonchalant and a rake. He's determined, a man of his word, loyal and now, confusingly in love with Caitlin. For me, their love story was full of passion and tenderness despite some heart tearing moments. I didn't like the infidelity part either but I guess this is what made the book more drawing. It hurts to read about it but the mollification that follows was also overwhelming. The Island setting and the search for Cleopatra's necklace was a new and interesting plot for me. I wondered about it even after the story ended. It piqued my curiosity to do some searching about Cleopatra and her Jewels. So, if a book can toy with me this way even after it ends, I say it's truly a worthy read. The reason why I didn't rate this book a five stars is cuz of the inadequate ending. I find it a bit lacking. I was hoping to read Caitlin and Randall with their offspring(s). There was no Epilogue or mentioned of it. Considering that unhappy past, I thought it was significant for Ms. Martin to write about their offspring(s) to make up for that one sad moment. This would have heighten readers spirit, my spirit. Well, this is only my self-preferences. Overall, this book is engaging and a worthy read especially if you have read the prequel, WICKED PROMISE. It was lovely to see Nick & Elizabeth, Maggie & Alex again...
