1.0 out of 5 stars Do you like ego rap ?, December 30, 2008
By Louis-Eric Simard (Montreal, Quebec Canada) - See all my reviews
K-maro came up with an exceptional first French-language album a few years back, with multiple chart-toppers and a fun fresh sound.

From then on he created his own brand of dance rap, which I'll call "ego dance rap". Half of his second album was about how successful he had been with the first, how much money he made, and how unpleasant he could be with people who would "stand in his way". That's completely backwards; the fans don't care how rich they've made a guy; they just want good music. Come up with good music and you'll get the rewards. Thankfully, there were still a few good tunes in there. The third French-language album was a best-of (I'm not kidding.)

This is his first English-language album. Most of it is ego-rap: it starts by telling you that he's made an album to make more money. We get that. He'd make more money still if it was good, and if he was providing us with our money's worth of fun and thrills. Right now it rather feels like we're being played a cheap trick.

The album goes on about how much of a self-made man K-maro is, how much money he made, how proud he is, etc. Who cares. After a few songs it just becomes nauseating. Then it goes on for a few songs more.

Obviously translated lyrics stretched out to barely fit the cheap recycled synthesized sound and some guitar round out the offering. The same musical and basic sing-song patterns come out over and over again. For some reason his very unique, powerful voice has been limited to the same 5 notes mixed down and drowned out by the wrong instruments.

"Change the game" thoroughly fails to. "Keep my grind" is terrible, but only made better when compared to the atrocious "Take you away Part 2". "All over again" and "Good old days" make up for some of the album, but then barely.

The guy has talent, but it fails to be demonstrated here. He needs new lyricists, new stories, and a better outward perspective.
