Editorial Reviews

1984 saw the long-awaited reunion of the classic Deep Purple Mark II line-up of Ritchie Blackmore, Ian Gillan, Roger Glover, Jon Lord and Ian Paice. It was the first time they had been together since 1973. They recorded a brand new studio album, 'Perfect Strangers' and headed out on tour. This show was recorded in Sydney, Australia and is the only full length concert film of the band at this time. It s a stunning concert with the band in incendiary form. The setlist mixes then new tracks from the 'Perfect Strangers' album with favorites from the early seventies culminating in the brilliant 'Smoke On The Water' finale. This is without doubt one of the finest Deep Purple concerts ever captured and a must have for their legions of fans, and includes a DVD containing the only footage available from the 'Perfect Strangers' tour featuring the reunion of the classic Mark II line-up plus a bonus tour documentary.

Much better mix, the sound is right there like you're on stage. Good set list, everyone in fine form. I was revisiting the first 2 reunion studio sets shortly before this release was announced (good timing) and I think they have aged well on the remasters, although I wasn't overwhelmed initially. Seems to be the case with music I value most, the quality reveals itself over time. These disks add nicely to that time.

Blackmore's solo on Space Trucking is one of the strangest I've seen or heard. I love it! I'm not a fan of including "Difficult to Cure" in a DP set list. The version on Rainbow's "Final Vinyl" can never be bettered. A live "Wasted Sunsets" would have been much better. This DP version is good, just doesn't belong, even if abbreviated leading into a Lord keyboard workout.

Pending further listens, I might still prefer the Stuttgart set as the best from the Blackmore reunion years (maybe), even if Gillan is not quite up to par on that one, and it's not as energetic, The Morse-era Live at the Olympia '96 is probably, ironically, the best of the modern DP live disks, recommended without the slightest reservation. Made in Japan is still the King overall.

The video of this same concert is good, but as a previous reveiwer mentioned, they sometimes cut away during a Blackmore solo to other players. Not as bad as the Denmark 72 concert, but still annoying. At least on that on, Jon Lord got his due. On this one we just see his body movements, no keyboard shots hardly at all. The short tour documentary is fun bun slight.

Defintiely worth aquiring if you have anything more than a passing interest in DP, close to essential.

Love the music, but the plastic inserts designed to hold the Cd's and DVD in place are crap and do not hold anything, with all 3 sliding around inside the jewel case. For $23, I expected better than this kindergarten effort at storage!

I was 7 years old when the MKII lineup were together in 1972 so seeing them was not an option, nor did I know who they were at the time anyway. By 1985, I was a big Blackmore fan, still am to this day, and I played soccer with him on Long Island just before the DP reunion was announced. Perfect Strangers is a fantastic album and this live CD/DVD is a treat for those who never saw the lineup in the 70's. Everyone sounds great here. Ian Gillan is in fine voice and the rest of the band are just cranking. The new songs mesh very well with the classics. Highly recommended for fans who really appreciate what a great band they were before inner turmoil ruined them for good.

This is a well done collection with very good production. This live "reunion" version of Purple was very good but doesn't match up to the original Mach 2. Decent collection of songs both old and new and the performances are excellent...just don't expect "Made in Japan" because it is a far cry from that masterpiece. Some of the new songs like "Perfect Strangers", "Knocking At Your Back Door" and "Under the Gun" are great live. Gillan is still a fine singer but it is clear that he has lost the ability to hit the unbelievable high notes as he does on "Made In Japan" and other earlier live recordings. "Child in Time" is a huge disappointment for that reason.

If you love DP by all means add this to your collection. If you are just beginning to gain interest in the band, I would suggest "Made In Japan" as a better introduction to Live DP. This one is good; MIJ is a classic recorded at just the right time in the bands long history. 4 Stars!

i'm huge fan of Deep purple
and there's been shows pro shot recorded/TV broadcasts of Deep purple LIVE during their 1984-1985 world tour
which have been sold as bootleg dvd's over the years
the Paris show 1985 was TV broadcast i have seen myself on bootleg DVD aswell as other shows from this tour
many Deep purple fans would know that
and one of these performances have now been officially released on DVD by Eagle vision
it's been a long time coming but finally one of the pro shot concerts have now been officially released
and it's the Australian tour concert

this DVD perfect strangers LIVE was pro shot recorded during the first leg of the Perfect strangers tour in Australia
only few months after the album was released on Vinyl actually.
according to the Editorial review on this amazon page this concert was filmed in sydney entertainment center
i have watched the whole concert Ian Gillan doesn't mention sydney at all after each song
he just says he's happy to be back it's been a long time etc
so for all i know this concert could've been filmed in Melbourne or Brisbane.
Apart from the location the performance is excellent this is the first leg of the tour so the whole band is playing fresh
the band's in Top form in this concert
it wasn't until during the end of this tour and the beginning of the The House of blue light writing/recording sessions
that Blackmore and Gillan were fighting/Arguing with each other again

the Picture and audio quality is excellent in my opinion, the audio has been mixed in 5.
