From Library Journal
Jones, whose two previous collections (The Country of Air, Copper Canyon Pr., 1986; At Last We Enter Paradise, LJ 11/1/91) garnered critical acclaim, is a poet of uncommon perceptual gifts. In these 27 remarkably accessible poems, born of what the Buddhists call "mindfulness," he once again demonstrates an ability both to transform into affirmation the tragedies of personal experience-such as finding his house burglarized or killing a snake to please the fearful wife he ultimately loses-and to extract from them a more universal truth. The language is frequently conversational yet rich in detail and metaphor, as when he stares "into the black heart of the kitchen window" or notices how the lining of his suitcoat "shines like silk inside a coffin." Recommended for poetry collections.
