Review

The opening track of A More Perfect Union called God s Counting on Me ... God s Counting on You [with guest Bruce Springsteen] is just the latest in an unmatchable career of socially conscious songs that Seeger delivers with unparalleled conviction. --- Scott Bauer, Associated Press

Seeger and Wyatt reveal an easy rapport and still vibrant creativity. Musically, it s a richly varied set . . . Uplifting . . . --Nick Cristiano, Philadelphia Inquirer

The tone of the album is established on the first song, God s Counting On Me...God s Counting On You, a new anthem for these times about communal responsibility for fixing what s wrong with our contemporary world. . . . It s an inspiring song destined to join the long list of Pete s essential classics. The communal spirit of God s Counting On Me continues to be felt on such songs as A More Perfect Union, sung by Lorre, Pete and Tom Morello, Wonderful Friends and A Toast to the Times. Other highlights include the gorgeous version of Somos El Barco/We are the Boat sung by Pete, Lorre and Emmylou Harris . . . and quietly compelling Bountiful River, the 10-minute opus which ends the album. That Lorre was able, 15 years after his stroke, to return to making vital music again, and that Pete has continued to be such a force of nature, music making and songwriting well into his 90s, is nothing less than inspiring.

Product Description

A More Perfect Unionis a newly-recorded 16-song collaboration between Pete Seegerand longtime friend and fellow singer-songwriter Lorre Wyatt, on which the duo is joined by newer generations of socially conscious musicians Bruce Springsteen, Tom Morello, Steve Earle, Emmylou Harris, and Dar Williams, among others. (Seeger also has a second new release, Pete Remembers Woody, a two-CD spoken-word/musical tribute to Woody Guthrie.)

Seeger's abiding mission, shared with Wyatt, is to inspire sociopolitical involvement and personal inclusiveness through song. That goal shines through the 14 songs newly co-written with Wyatt. The duo addresses recent and ongoing political, economic and environmental issues alongside gentler appreciations of life s good moments, meditations on the future, and exhortations to individual action. The opening track, God s Counting on Me...God s Counting on You puts the responsibility for battling corporate greed, the BP oil spill, and other manmade catastrophes squarely in our hands. Time to turn things around/Trickle up, not trickle down, rasps Springsteen, while Pete reminds us, What we do, you and me/Will affect eternity.

Other hot button songs include This Old Man Revisited, an ironic scorcher about the joys of war with guest vocals by a never-grittier Steve Earle and deceptively gentle Dar Williams (who also appears on the sorrowful Hurricane Katrina aftermath, Memories Out of Mud). Tom Morello, former guitar-shredder for Rage Against the Machine and now recording and performing as the far folkier Nightwatchman, chips in on vocals and acoustic lead guitar on the CD s title song, which carries multiple layers of meaning. Somos el Barco (We are the Boat ),Wyatt s best-known solo composition, adds Emmylou Harris s sweet voice to Lorre s resolute tenor. There s more to this CD than political commentary.

Among the more lighthearted songs are the delightfully self-deprecating Old Apples (...still can make good sauce ) and Howling for Our Supper, a pet s-eye view of Pete and Lorre writing another pointless ditty when it s feeding time. On the heartwarming side, there are Wonderful Friends, a different version than found on one of two of Seeger s Grammy-winning Appleseed CDs, At 89 (2008), A Toast to the Times, and the closing Bountiful River. Throughout the CD, Pete and Lorre share and split vocal duties; Pete plays banjo and acoustic 12-string guitar, while Lorre handles the six-string acoustic and additional banjo. Providing a rich, acoustic instrumental bed are co-producers David Bernz (guitar, banjo, vocals, harmonica), engineer-percussionist Jeff Haynes, and a host of musicians based near Pete s Beacon, N.Y., home. The use of a wide variety of percussion adds an atmospheric, throbbing Third World tinge to many of the songs. Seeger and Wyatt, more than 25 years his junior, have been friends for more than 40 years and have co-written dozens of songs since then. Massachusetts-based Wyatt was sidelined for much of the last 15 years recovering from a stroke but has fully recovered and is back on [his] musical feet again.

4.0 out of 5 stars At 93 Seeger can still write songs and make you sing along September 25, 2012
Format:Audio CD
This is one of TWO Pete Seeger-related albums being released today (the other is the 2-CD set titled "Pete Remembers Woody". Each is different and I'll be posting my review of the "Woody" title elsewhere on Amazon.

Of the two songwriters listed and shown on the front of this CD, Seeger is, obviously, the best known. Wyatt, a neighbor of Seeger's in the Hudson River Valley of New York, works with Seeger on the Clearwater Project and is best known for his song "Somos El Barco" (We are the Boat). Which is on this CD as well. Seeger and Wyatt sing together on many of the songs but, for "Somebody Else's Eyes" it's just Seeger on guitar with Sara Milanovich on violin. Seeger goes it alone on the next track "Strange Lullabye". You can hear the affects of his age on the latter but Seeger has always been about the words and the story. Even in his prime years, no one would ever call his voice "melodious". As with any Seeger record there is a humor story song and "Howling For Our Supper" is that this time. It's just Seeger and Wyatt and Seeger's 5-string banjo in a song portraying cats singing (well, howling) for their dinner. There's also a fun song about aging - "Old Apples" - with a chorus about how old apples still make great applesauce.

The duo has some well-known friends along to help on a few of the songs this time. Bruce Springsteen adds his voice to the opener "God's Counting on me.. God's Counting on You". But he's not alone here. Apparently recorded separately and added in the mix, "the Boss" joins Seeger, Wyatt, The Rivertown Kids (more of Seeger's neighbors) and at least another dozen folks listed as "additional singers".

5.0 out of 5 stars A long awaited, much appreciated CD from Lorre & Pete September 30, 2012
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I received my CD, A More Perfect Union 2 days ago and loved it. My favorite song "God's counting on me, God's counting on you". It gave me that inspiring feeling that all of Pete's older songs have given and I was singing right along with Pete and Lorre. I really like political songs, which we have so few of these days and especially "Old Apples". We need to have more songs that respect people as they age and teach our children to do that too. Reading the story behind all the difficult moments for Pete and Lorre as they pulled this CD together makes it even more fabulous. Somos El Barco is the most beautiful recording of Lorre's song I've heard, including the one on Harp. I hope that this CD will inspire many people to think about what it means to live life with compassion for people, living creatures and this earth we live on and to not just think about making another dollar. I highly recommend this work of art from Pete and Lorre. Emily

There are an amazing variety of memorable songs here, all intensely and quite personally relevant to life, friendship, the planet, our country, political activism, aging, war, healing, and more. For those who've been waiting for the first official Pete and Lorre version of their acclaimed 'God's Counting On You' here it is in spades--rollicking, rhythmic, and impossible not to sing along with. And while on the well-known track, here is the first full recording ever, and first full recording by Lorre Wyatt, of his world famous song of solidarity with others 'Somos El Barco'. You can tell that he and Pete, who really are old friends that have been writing songs together for 40 years since the early Clearwater days, were having a good time recording this. While Pete's voice at 92 is raspy and old, he can still sing up a storm, and Lorre's touching tenor voice compliments and supports him beautifully.

I seldom cry when I hear songs, but found the tears streaming down on two cuts, both Pete's touching lullaby to a child in a war-torn country (is it Afghanistan?), and the hauntingly beautiful Fields of Harmony, which simply and poetically speaks of his long life on the leading edge of the fight for justice and compassion and looks ahead to his being beyond all that and able to look down on it. There is real encouragement here for we who are wanting and working for a better world in A More Perfect Union, Bountiful River, and other songs leavened by smiles about old apples making good sauce and cats howling for their dinner. I found the songs, the variety, the arrangements, the added voices of the chorus and other well-known folkies, all to be outstanding, and the story of the difficulties behind the making of this album really fascinating. And I find myself singing various cuts as I go about my work--a sure sign that something has gone deep in. Let's hope that Pete and Lorre keep on writing, singing, and recording together!

Nice combination of Pete Seeger and his friend Lorre Wyatt. Pete Seeger is still his wonderful self at his senior age and the blend of his voice with the younger voice of Wyatt is delightful.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another great cd fr. Pete (and Lorre) February 26, 2013

Pete Seeger is an amazing musician! I bought his last cd, made at age 89, and liked it a
lot. This one is great too, with lots of new songs! Very very moving, and to think it was recorded
while Pete is in his early 90s.
