4.0 out of 5 stars A Great Launching Point November 5, 2012
By Cameron
Format:Paperback
We've all had those moments where we don't know what to say. In an even worse scenario, we have each had a moment where we said the completely wrong thing. Our words have the ability to comfort and encourage or the ability to destroy and hurt. In Liz Duckworth's book A Perfect Word For Every Occasion," she attempts to provide a guide of word choice and etiquette for various scenarios and topics. The chapters cover subjects such as words for the grieving, words of gratitude, words for the sick and suffering, words for birthdays, words for weddings and engagements, words of encouragement, words for celebrations, words of events and activities, words of truth and love, and words for a changing world (a chapter about our online dialogues and comments).
I found the book to be a great starting point. It is certainly a resource to place on our shelf for the moments you are lacking in words. Of course, one must be careful not to simply regurgitate the chapters in letter form; rather, the reader is encourage to take each chapter and make it their own, to encourage people in a genuine fashion. The book is not as a beneficial when read straight-through; however, it is usefulness will be known in time. I, for one, was once again reminded of the necessity to carefully to choose words and to never allow an opportunity to uplift someone go by silently.

If you have had trouble finding the right words, or if you unintentionally come across as rude and short, this is a book for you. If you have the lost the art of encouraging and supporting those around you, I would also recommend this book as a starting point.

Please note that Bethany House Publishers gave me a free copy of this book for my honest opinion. I was in no way pressured to give a positive review of the above material.

5.0 out of 5 stars An awesome resource! October 9, 2012
Format:Paperback
When I first heard about it, I loved the idea for this book - and after I had the opportunity to read it I loved it even more. This book includes sections on Words for the Grieving, Words of Gratitude, Celebrations, Birthdays, Engagements and much more. I like that this book doesn't read like a script - it's not giving you word-for-word thoughts meant to be passed off as your own. It does include many excellent quotes and scripture references, but even better it includes questions and prompts to help you come up with your own heartfelt sentiments.

Another great feature included are what not to say. I think this is sometimes one of the hardest parts of expressing support, especially during difficult circumstances. We want to reach out, but sometimes are so afraid of saying the wrong thing that it is easier not to say anything at all. Another great section focuses on wedding correspondence - when we were first engaged I had no idea all of the rules and protocol that went along with the invitations and other documents and would have loved to have this book as I planned our wedding.

I sponsor children through Compassion International and immediately knew this book would be a valuable tool when sending them letters as well, and was excited to see the author even mentioned Compassion in the beginning of the book. I absolutely loved this book and know it will be a great resource for many years to come in many ways.

I received a copy of this book from Bethany House Publishers in exchange for my honest review. All opinions expressed are my own.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book! October 7, 2012
By Amanda
Format:Paperback
I found the entire concept of this book intriguing and I was right. What a helpful book packed with practical advice on what to say for just about every occasion as the title suggests. I also really appreciated all of the suggestions on what not to say. The book includes thoughtful quotes that one might include and Scriptures that would pertain to different circumstances. It isn't really a write this exactly kind of book but rather gives lots of suggestions to get your creative juices flowing. I found the section on Words for the Sick and Suffering to be the most help personally as I always struggle with what to say in those situations. I will be keeping this book close at hand when I find myself at a loss for what to say. Please note I did receive a complimentary copy of this book from Bethany House Publishers in exchange for this review. I was not required to give a favorable review. All opinions are my own.

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved This Book! October 7, 2012
Format:Paperback
This useful and keeper volume includes many occasions and instances where the proper condolence written and verbal is needed. Included amongst the chapters are: Words for the Grieving, Words of Encouragement, Words of Truth and Love, Words for Weddings and Engagements and so many more chapters! Also has quite useful sections within the chapters on what not to say to someone, and included are how to make words your own, and contains many quotes and bible passages for reference.

I loved A Perfect Word for Every Occasion, so useful and handy! Finally a book that covers every situation and life change possible. Book flows very easily and can sucessfully be read either at one time or in segments. I wish I had this book when I couldn't find the right words to express when someone I knew was going through a very challenging time. Keep this book in a handy place for reference and always know what to say without struggling for the right words. I highly recommend this very well organized and written book to others. I received a complimentary copy from Bethany House Publishers for my review.
