Book Description

October 1, 2006
By all accounts, the perfect game pitched by New York Yankees right-hander Don Larsen in the 1956 World Series qualifies as a true miracle. No one knows why it happened, or why an unlikely baseball player such as Larsen was the one who tossed it. In The Perfect Yankee Larsen describes the facts surrounding one of the most famous games in baseball history and details the complete story behind the amazing "Walter Mitty" performance. A former Baltimore Orioles pitcher who lost 21 games in 1954, the free-spirited Larsen reveals how comic book "Ghoulies" told him he should experiment with a no-windup pitching delivery just prior to the ‘56 World Series. Knocked out in Game Two, the man known as Gooney Bird to his teammates regrouped to record a miracle win that propelled the Casey Stengel-led Yankees to the world championship over the defending champion Brooklyn Dodgers.

Amazon.com Review

Yankee faithful and haters alike will relish this pitch-by-pitch retelling of one of baseball's most remarkable feats: Don Larsen's perfect game in game five of the 1956 World Series. Larsen, one of the game's beloved figures, has remained humble and unaffected as his record has stood unequalled for four decades. In this book with sports journalist Mark Shaw, he throws in asides on his teammates, his opponents, even the umpires who worked the game. Larsen's memoir recalls a time when nobody spat in anyone's face, strikes were called only on the field, and baseball was still the national pastime. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

5.0 out of 5 stars Riveting! a review from a former minor leaguer turned teacher, principal, writer, December 7, 2008
This review is from: The Perfect Yankee: The Incredible Story of the Greatest Miracle in Baseball History (Paperback)
My wife, who really is not a baseball fan, recently commented on how few perfect games have ever been tossed in Major League history. I explained to her that one of the perfect games was a World Series game. She responded, "That'll never happen again, huh?" No, it never will. So buy this book and relive one of baseball's most historic games.
