By all accounts, the perfect game pitched by New York Yankees right-hander Don Larsen in the 1956 World Series qualifies as a true miracle. No one knows why it happened, or why an unlikely baseball player such as Larsen was the one who tossed it. A former Baltimore Orioles pitcher who lost 21 games in 1954, the free-spirited Larsen reveals how comic book "Ghoulies" told him he should experiment with a no-windup pitching delivery just prior to the ‘56 World Series. Knocked out in Game Two, the man known as Gooney Bird to his teammates regrouped to record a miracle win that propelled the Casey Stengel-led Yankees to the world championship over the defending champion Brooklyn Dodgers.

Don Larsen's perfect game in the 1956 World Series was a masterpiece, the greatest game ever pitched. This book chronicles Larsen's thoughts and explains why he was the most unlikely candidate to pitch such a game. The Perfect Yankee is a must read for any sports fan.

Baseball books are a dime a dozen, but the story of Don Larsen's remarkable achievement is outstanding. Author Shaw captures Larsen's voice and the miracle that occurred on October 8, 1956. This is a must read for any baseball fan.

My wife, who really is not a baseball fan, recently commented on how few perfect games have ever been tossed in Major League history. I explained to her that one of the perfect games was a World Series game. She responded, "That'll never happen again, huh?" No, it never will.
