Book Description

November 2001
This revised and updated edition will help a new generation of hand quilters to master techniques that will improve both their stitches and their enjoyment of quilting. Easy as 1-2-3, detailed chapters include: A discussion of marking tools and methods; Instructions for assembling the textile sandwich; A dozen detachable quilting practice exercises; Illustrated examples of the quilting stitch; A three-page chart with solutions to help diagnose quilting problems. AUTHORBIO: Patricia J. Morris has completed 25 years as a quilting teacher, workshop presenter, judge, and author. Once a contributor to Quilt World, she produced Quilter's Bookshelf, Queries and Quotes, and writing as Jean Pell, Tools of the Trade and Quilters Today. Morris has judged more than 60 regional and national quilting competitions, and has taught more than 150 workshops throughout the country. REVIEW: Line drawings and clear explanations make all instructions easy to follow. The quilting exercises are logical and straighforward and are sure to help quilters to improve their technique. The information I found the most interesting was on quilting direction, and on planning which lines to quilt when. But the book's full of great tips; all in all, readers will find this book a really complete handbook on every aspect of the actual completion of a quilt.

2.0 out of 5 stars Look, mom - no pictures!!, December 12, 2001

This review is from: Perfecting the Quilting Stitch: The Ins and Outs-Revised Ed. (Paperback)
The first thing you notice in this book is that there is not one single photograph: no quilts, no samples, no pictures of a hand holding a needle. There are plenty of drawings but nothing that shows you what a real hand would look like while quilting and no examples of what the quilting would look like on fabric. I tried to find some indication of when this book originally came out but could not. Some sections seem unchanged from 5-10 years ago, especially those dealing with supplies. There is no mention of batts that are cotton with a polyester glaze on each side or of needle punched batts. No mention is made of basting sprays.

Some recommendations left me amazed. If there really are quilt police, this woman is their commissioner. She suggests basting that is no more than 1/2" long and leaving 6" of backing fabric on each side when basting! She prewashes her fabrics THREE times! Yes, there is some valuable information, including worksheets in the back of the book. However, if this had been my introduction to hand quilting, I would have been too intimidated to begin.

5.0 out of 5 stars This book is an excellent summary of the whole quilt process, April 17, 1999
By A Customer
I found this book by far the best description of the whole process of constructing a quilt I have ever used. It covers the process from choosing a pattern, batt, material and thread, through the preparation for quilting, to the quality of the stitching and the finishing. If you buy only one book on how to actually make a quilt, buy this one.
