About the Author

Corey S. was born in a modern day paradise, located in Northwest St. Catherine, on the island of Jamaica. He was a good child and with the help of his guardian angel Rebecca, quickly educated himself and as many as would attend and hear. He became a teacher and then advanced through the civil service of his native country until working in the office of the Prime Minister. At twenty two, Corey S. traveled to the U.S. to attend college. He changed direction and became a freedom fighter in the streets of Houston, New York and Atlanta, funding his activities by "any means necessary". At age thirty he was deported back to Jamaica where he ascended and assumed the poistion of "the Voice of Re". He retired at age thirty-two and now spends his time teaching young boys to read English and use the computer.

My reason for the headline is owed to the notion that when I first came upon the phrase 'hip-hop/ Reggae', (as is present in the title),I felt troubled by it. As a mature woman my mind closed in with some disappointment, if not apprehension given that 'hip-hop/ Reggae' are genres of music unequivocally associated with the young;I felt some level pf preclusion by the reference since hip-hop/Reggae are genres given over to our youths. This correlation suggeszted that I might not be part of an intended demographic which could interest the author as his target. But was \i ever so wrongl probable exclusion from that group whom I presumed to be the author's target. Am I ever so glad to have been introduced to the work by the author's mother with whom I became acquainted. Otherwise I would have lost out on this great piece of literature.
In the meantime I soon realised that it's imperative that we give young people a chance to create their own kind of music especially as such helps to shape their presence and establish their influence in our evolving world. The young must be allowed the important opportunity of self-expression and not be denied the necessary outlets that aide and abet their emergence amongst us as the future. The older generation in our midst had its opportunity to create jazz etc as their defining genres of music which came out of the passe musical forms back then. As the evolution of music continues we have to accept and appreciate that the music of our grandchildren is 'their own kind of something new that they need to exercise for the enjoyable construction of their own world; this movement of course will then give way to the sway of the younger upcoming minds with a B-line to change accortding to their own renewed inspirations and talents.

Original and brilliant is how I would describe not only Corey, but also his poetry. Corey has taken everything that has influenced him in life and distilled it into pure poetry that is distinctly his own. Like Corey his writing is rich with the experiences of life, and that life is one lived under the hot glaring sun of Jamaica, a place where there are many paradoxes.
