Product Description

Style Name: Pepper Mill

Perfex Mills are true classics. They have a fantastic reputation for a reason; they are expertly built – built to last, using high quality materials and built to produce the best, most reliable grind. They've been around for over a half a century. The company is family-owned and located in Saint-Etienne, France. Their mills have changed little in design and build. The Perfex Pepper Mill is made of durable, long lasting cast aluminum. The characteristic, front-loading chute, makes refilling it fast and easy. Adjusting the grind is easy too; the Pepper Mill allows you to adjust your grind – from fine to course – by simply turning a nut on the underside. Features a metal burr grinder. It stands 4-1/2-inch. Built by Perfex, built to last a lifetime.

I have had mine for over 30 years.
I value it because it grinds very fine or very coarse, as needed.
The aluminum is easy to hold and easy to keep clean.
The size is great for easy, rapid grinding.
It has been worth its price to me many times over.

Without a doubt, this is the best mill in the collection of pepper mills that I own.

Yes, it is pricey - especially for the small size and, thus, capacity of the grinder. So what? The grinding mechanism is fully adjustable (on the bottom, not the top) and it absolutely "rains" pepper onto whatever you wish. You can empty the entire mill in a few minutes; it is that efficient. The fill chute beats most of the "top-loader" types in terms of ease of use.

I also have big hands (more than an octave spread) and have no problems using this pepper mill. I use this one for black pepper and a William Bounds for white pepper.

This product is elegant, durable and has a life time warranty. Just the right size for the table. I bought this one for my daughter as she had the pepper mill therefore I thought she needed to have the complete set.

I bought this pepper grinder in NYC 28 years ago at a famous upper west side food emporium. (It was ridiculously expensive then too.) It has had daily use ever since and has never failed. It grinds easily, is easy to refill through the little trap door, adjusts the grind quickly and gives perfect results. It is solidly built and is the last grinder I expect to buy. Moreover, over the years in my kitchen it has been dropped, banged, boiled (once, briefly) and still works great. This is my working grinder, not a fancy one for the table (though it goes there too because I have no tolerance for the fancy one that takes forever to get the pepper out.) I came today to get another for my daughter. To the reviewer concerned about using a wrench I say- "no problem!". Use a wrench if the top nut is too tight, counterclockwise. It can take it, no problem.

I've owned mine for 10 years now and it has never held a consistent grind. The nut on the bottom loosens with use, increasing the coarseness. We tighten it down and have pepper too fine for our liking, and within days we're back to large, chewy chunks of split peppercorns. My 2 sisters each own the same model, one for over 10 years and hers holds the grind while the other is about 5 years old and does not. I've disassembled and cleaned mine a couple of times with no change.

So it may be a case of poor quality control, or perhaps Perfex has compromised the quality while holding the price.

I've had this little salt mill for nearly ten years now. It has performed reliably with every kind of salt I've put in it from kosher, Himalayan, French, etc. - and always a perfect grind. Easy to adjust the knob for however coarse or fine I would like the salt to be. The brushed aluminum is quite heavy - looks and behaves like stainless steel. The front chute makes it easier to load than the ones you have to unscrew the tops for.

I've changed decor, dishes and even homes over the years and this classic always looks great with whatever I choose to pair it with; I use it on the table as well, having long since retired ordinary salt shakers. Doesn't get gummed up if I have to hold it over a steaming plate.

Being that mine is nearly a decade old that should say something about its longevity but also a caution in case they've changed anything regarding manufacturing. Mine is made in France and came with a lifetime warranty - you may want to check those sort of things. If ever anything would happen to it I would definitely purchase again - highly recommended.

This IS the Bentley of Pepper Mills. But for the exhorbitant cost of shipping associated with the sole seller here--as yet unrated (another red flag), you would be well-advised to shop elsewhere!

I love freshly ground pepper, and have used a Perfex for at least 40 years (I am 70). I have given them as wedding gifts to close relatives. Everybody raves about them. They last forever, grind fast and easily. I once lost the bottom nut (which adjusts the grind) in a dish and crunched down on it, so check it from time to time. Yes, not as easily adjustable as some others, but just pick fairly coarse grind and leave it there. I cup my hand, put in peppercorns and then move the input scoop into my palm. Never spill. Better than anything I have used, and I grind fresh pepper on nearly everything exept cereal and oatmeal. Repeat: lasts forever and always the same grind!
I do keep it on the counter in a very shallow Japanese soy dipping plate to keep pepper off the counter (about $1.50 at the local Japanese outlet).
