Book Description

0521558611 978-0521558617 April 26, 1996
This original collection revisits and re-evaluates Chomsky's classic competence/performance distinction from a wide variety of perspectives and areas of expertise. The discussion is placed within a broad framework, taking account of a view of language both as a societal construct and as internal, developing within the mind and/or brain. Renowned experts in the fields of lexis, sociolinguistics, connectionism, Universal Grammar, language testing and interlanguage draw together ideas from the most recent developments in second language learning and psychological theory. Germane to their debate is the question of whether it is helpful, or in principle possible, to draw a distinction between competence and performance in second language learning. The volume will be of interest to teachers, researchers and students of applied linguistics, education and general linguistics.

5.0 out of 5 stars Performance and Competence in Second Language Learning, March 29, 2000

This review is from: Performance and Competence in Second Language Acquisition (Paperback)
This book is a must for any library of an ESL teacher or someone wanting to know about second language acquisition (SLA). This book is compiled of 9 papers by nine authors who have clear and concise definitions and explanations about SLA. It starts with an introduction by the editor and an explanation of Chomsky's 'competence' and 'performance.' I would order one for yourself and one for a friend!

First Sentence:
Having been invited to contribute the first paper to this book, it seemed to me to be appropriate that I should directly address its general theme, 'performance and competence', and that I should do so without specific reference, in the first instance at least, to second language acquisition. Read the first page
