Just a re-print of an '80s book from same author,
By Fernando F. Achon (Republic of Panama) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Performance Ignition Systems HP1306: Electric or Breaker-Point Ignition System Tuning for Maximum Performance, Power and Economy (Mass Market Paperback)
I bought this book expecting it to be an updated edition of this author's former book "The Doctor's step by step guide to optimizing your ignition" which I borrowed from a friend and found quite interesting. Aside from new ilustrations for products offered by the author's former company (now owned by Rostra Precision Controls) that were re-designed or newly offered by the time of print plus the addition of a 10 page alphabetical index, this book is a page-by-page re-print of the former. If you are buying this book with the same expectations I had then you will be just as disapointed as I am with my purchase. Otherwise, it is just as insightfull on the theory of ignition as the previous book, but its views on hardware are no longer right as even most of the products made by the company which still bears the author's name do no longer work in the way they are described on the book. In a few words: good theory, but outdated. Hope the author will sit down and write a new book with updated reviews on the current state of ignition technology.

Electronic Ignition,
This review is from: Performance Ignition Systems HP1306: Electric or Breaker-Point Ignition System Tuning for Maximum Performance, Power and Economy (Mass Market Paperback)
This is a very generic presentation on electronic ignition. It did not address trouble shooting various brands or comparisons of various brands. It would not help me to select or service electronic ignition. It is primarily directed to Jacobs Ignition. The information is very basic but quite thorough at that level.

Great information for technically proficient,

If you're looking for "how to pick the best ignition system for your car", this isn't the book for you. If, however, you want to better understand how an ignition system works, and how to determine whether the performance changes you're making are actually doing any good, this book will help you.

A very well written book on the subject since this is really one of the only sources out there.
Would be nice if they updated it to include COP, and setting up an aftermarket system (not just MSD/Jacobs boxes). Anyhow, I have found this book to be very helpful and has offered a new understanding of what is really going on with the ignition system. |
