Richard Schechner - one of contemporary theatre's foremeost practitioners- explores in these essays the origins of performance, drama, and theatre and delineates the subtle differences between them. He emphasizes the complex interrelationships that form the basis of ethnological studies of ritual, performance in everyday life, environmental theatre, modern European and American theatre, Eurasian and African theatre, body-oriented dialogue and psychotherapies, play, crisis behaviour, rites of passage and mysticism (especially shamanism).

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Schechner's views are usually provocative, his incidental comments are often acute, and he has a commendable gift for making unexpected connections." -- British Journal of Aesthetics

Schechner's Performance Theory marks a watershed in the study of performance. It should be on the bookshelf of anyone concerned with theater, anthropology, or ritual.

4.0 out of 5 stars Peformance Theory - what is great and what is not in the electronic edition, September 4, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)

This is a great book and one that is indispensible for the theatre academic or practitioner. I had it in paper and I decided to buy it kindle format for convenience. There is one problem that I found in some of the kindle books: graphics are not well scanned - small fonts in the graphics are not readable.
