Book Description

April 1999
Did you know running NT installed "out of the box" on a two processor system could degrade performance to the point it would be more effective to use one processor? Or do you know how switching one setting on an NT server can triple the number of simultaneous user logons? How about speeding up your network by modifying protocol and browser settings on your Windows 95 PCs? Maybe you would like to know that by default, there are programs always running on NT which slow your system down and you most likely don't even need them!

Performance Tuning Microsoft Networks, the new book that teaches you how to make a Microsoft network run like a rocket, answers these questions quickly in this condensed book. Internal Microsoft secrets, such as registry modifications, are revealed in addition to some of the better known methods. There is no other book that covers all of the secret techniques listed in this book. The author, being Microsoft, Cisco, IBM, and HP certified, used inside connections to obtain and test proprietary tuning secrets. This book is the most current one published (updated Jan 99) and includes information on the latest technologies such as Ultra SCSI, Serial Storage Architecture (SSA), and server clustering.

This list is only a small sample of what is covered:

Which hardware NT runs the fastest on.

The 3 software elements that must be in place for effective use of multiple processors.

How to tune NT depending on how it is being used.

How to use NT tools to determine bottlenecks.

Disk techniques affecting performance and fault tolerance.

Virtual Memory

Secret Registry modifications

Performance boost priorites - what that setting really does.

Tuning your systems to reduce congestion on the network.

TCP/IP modifications.

Explanation of TCP/IP name resolution.

Tracing a WINS resolution using Network Monitor (Appendix D).

Brief comparison of differences in the Intel Processors (Appendix E).

Browser modifications.

Synchronization and how to tune it to your needs.

5.0 out of 5 stars Interesting new ideas, October 27, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Performance Tuning Microsoft Networks (Mass Market Paperback)
Interesting new takes on some of these ideas. The tips on structuring for minimal router hops were useful. I never thought of routers as areas of congestion before reading this. Also enjoyed the author's philosophy on backward compatibility as I run into those sorts of frustrations at my company. Think I may show my boss that so he understands why it isn't cost effective to do cheap upgrades.

4.0 out of 5 stars Short but effective, May 29, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Performance Tuning Microsoft Networks (Mass Market Paperback)
I'd rather pay for this book than $5000 for the 3 courses mentioned below if all I want to learn is optimization. Anyway, some of it I had learned in MCP studies like RAID and pagefile config. Some I had not heard of before reading this, like multi-processor setups and formatting correctly for performance. I'd call this more of a "quick start" guide. It's short but it gets the job done and you know how to tune your system after reading it.

2.0 out of 5 stars Haven't I seen this some place before?, May 19, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Performance Tuning Microsoft Networks (Mass Market Paperback)
I am a bit disappointed. Most of the information (at least 90%) comes straight out of 3 core courses that Microsoft offers for all MCP's. For those of you who have basic experience with NT workstation support, you will probably not be to impressed by the contents. The examples of network performance tuning were weak. The rest of the tips on NT workstation optimization were mundane at best. Bottom line: You'll spend $20 on a 30 minute read, that will net you about 5% more knowledge than you already have.
