5.0 out of 5 stars Interesting new ideas
Interesting new takes on some of these ideas. The tips on structuring for minimal router hops were useful. I never thought of routers as areas of congestion before reading this. Also enjoyed the author's philosophy on backward compatibility as I run into those sorts of frustrations at my company. Think I may show my boss that so he understands why it isn't cost...

2.0 out of 5 stars Haven't I seen this some place before?
I am a bit disappointed. Most of the information (at least 90%) comes straight out of 3 core courses that Microsoft offers for all MCP's. For those of you who have basic experience with NT workstation support, you will probably not be to impressed by the contents. The examples of network performance tuning were weak. The rest of the tips on NT workstation...

Think I may show my boss that so he understands why it isn't cost effective to do cheap upgrades.

4.0 out of 5 stars Short but effective, May 29, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Performance Tuning Microsoft Networks (Mass Market Paperback)
I'd rather pay for this book than $5000 for the 3 courses mentioned below if all I want to learn is optimization. Anyway, some of it I had learned in MCP studies like RAID and pagefile config. Some I had not heard of before reading this, like multi-processor setups and formatting correctly for performance. I'd call this more of a "quick start" guide. It's short but it gets the job done and you know how to tune your system after reading it.

For those of you who have basic experience with NT workstation support, you will probably not be to impressed by the contents. The examples of network performance tuning were weak. The rest of the tips on NT workstation optimization were mundane at best. Bottom line: You'll spend $20 on a 30 minute read, that will net you about 5% more knowledge than you already have.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very good, August 14, 1999

It was refreshing to read a technical book that held my attention and was accurate. Also I didn't see any typos that tech books usually have. For the content - very interesting. Original ideas. Good hardware info.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great coverage of NT Optimization without months of reading., March 18, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Performance Tuning Microsoft Networks (Mass Market Paperback)
Optimization is not a subject that should take months of reading and it certainly is covered very well in the 116 pages here. If you are looking for a lengthy "absolute bible of everything NT" - (security, printing, etc), this is not the book, buy a different one. But I thought it was a nice read if you take it for what it is - complete system and network optimization. I loved the before and after examples of architecture improvements - applied those ideas to my own net and got a few "pats on the back" in the process. Network Monitor is covered briefly in the Appendix, was very enlightening to actually see how name resolution works using it. I've read several articles on Optimization in WinNT mag, but this book gets into new enhancements I had not heard of before.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hits the nail right on the head., November 18, 1998

This review is from: Performance Tuning Microsoft Networks (Mass Market Paperback)
I used this to help in studying for my NT server test. He doesn't waste my time with all kinds of meaningless fluff. It reminds me of the "Inside" series on Microsoft Press. Right to the point. There is info in here that I haven't found in other books on Optimization. Specifically, I liked the tuning info on registry, hardware, TCP/IP, and exact instructions on effective use of Performance Monitor. He goes into better detail than other books but still keeps it to the point. I would certainly recommend it to others. Can't beat it for price/information ratio compared to other expensive bloated books that take years to read and a loan to purchase.
