Book Description

July 3, 2009
What is The Zone? The Zone is intangible. It is that ideal - that place - that state of mind - where performing is easy, your actions are effortless, and your results exceed all expectations. Actors, musicians, public speakers, dancers, models, sports-people, entertainers, and singers - we're all performers. We all receive training, practise for countless hours, enter the performance environment, and sooner or later, for better or for worse, we get affected by the performance situation. We experience performance arousal - a phenomenon which can either get us into The Zone or cause devastating performance anxiety. So what really is performance arousal? How can you better understand it? How can you control your performance arousal instead of letting it control you? With Performing in The Zone, you too can discover the secrets of performance arousal and unleash your true performing potential! You too can perform in The Zone!

"A highly readable book of real value" --The Strad Magazine

"For anyone who seeks more control over their performances on stage, Performing in The Zone is highly recommended" --Pan: The Journal of the British Flute Society

Have you ever gone to a concert, a play, a sports event or even your favorite restaurant and just been blown away by how amazing it was? Superior performance in all aspects of life is much more than a mere coincidence! Performing in the Zone by Jon Gorrie was written to help you take a thorough look at yourself and take your performing (and anything in your life) to the next level.

First we are presented with the theory behind this process where we get acquainted with the parameters of performance. Next we are given the many techniques we can use to get situated where we need to be for optimal performance. Next, we formalize the process by establishing a program to accomplish our goals. Lastly, we are given the keys to dig even deeper in the pursuit of that "Zone"

All in all, the clear and concise text and numerous exercises make this an excellent "workbook for success". Anyone can apply the many lessons here to achieving a superior result in anything they choose.

5.0 out of 5 stars An important tool for every performer October 3, 2009
By Soprano
Format:Paperback
Performing in the Zone contains concrete exercises and tips on how to handle your nerves and balance your energy when performing and auditioning. Many books of this type can be a little `flakey', but this book is hands on and to the point. If you are having problems with performance anxiety I definitely suggest ordering this book! I'm very happy about having it and see it as a godsend.

Thanks to the exercises in the book I recently experienced my first audition as an opera singer where I was in the driver's seat and not a victim of my nerves. I look forward to my upcoming auditions for the rest of the Autumn with excitement!!!

2.0 out of 5 stars A bit of new age+ too much science= jumble April 9, 2012
Format:Paperback
I like the spirit and enthusiasm of this likable author, however ,I must say this is a very expensive book for very little actual information or insight in a paperback book.
While the author makes a caveat to not wanting to weigh us down with algebraic formulas, he relies on them none the less in illustrating his main points. I can not think of anything that takes me further from the zone than mathematical formulas that describe an elusive "zone". Eloise Riistadt managed to induce the reader in this zone without dwelling on it in her whimsical essays comprising "A Soprano on Her Head", for example.
There are summaries of various meditation and martial arts systems that reflect what many of us see offered seemingly everywhere these days. I'm not sure if that is helpful in book like this. Perhaps it all could have been boiled down to half the size and I would have given it a higher rating after paying half as much.

5.0 out of 5 stars Real advice, real results November 10, 2012
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I've struggled with performance anxiety my whole life. Unfortunately, most of the books on this topic are geared to athletes. The advice just didn't address the artistry issues. Here's a book just for musicians and other performing artists. The advice is simple and straightforward. You will learn how to reach the mental state of optimum performance, the Zone. The book lays out a plan to follow for 30-60 days, leading up to a big performance. Things such as free writing, calming techniques, positive imagery, mental practice, all fit into the goal of better playing with less nervousness. When used over time. these ideas and techniques become natural. Old, negative energy is replaced with positive energy. Anyone serious about overcoming anxiety on stage should get this volume.

As a teacher and performer I thought this book had such specific and practical tools to help with 'having to be perfect during a performance'. It has made a difference to me as well as to my students.
