Editorial Reviews

Released in June 2003, John Mellencamp's Trouble No More was received with universal critical acclaim and a No. 1 debut on Billboard's Blues chart. Featuring Mellencamp and his band's spirited take on 11 American folk and blues classics, including Robert Johnson's 'Stones In My Passway,' Son House's 'Death Letter,' Woody Guthrie's 'Johnny Hart,' Willie Dixon's 'Down In The Bottom,' Lucinda Williams' 'Lafayette,' and several others, the album was recorded and mixed in just 17 days, capturing the sessions' bounding energy.

On July 31, 2003, John Mellencamp performed the complete album for a rapt, sold-out audience at New York's Town Hall. For the concert, Mellencamp was joined by the same musicians who recorded the studio album with him: Mike Wanchic (guitars), Andy York (guitars), Miriam Sturm (violin), Dane Clark (drums), John Gunnell (bass) and Michael Ramos (keyboards). They also performed stripped-down versions of Mellencamp's 'Small Town,' 'Paper In Fire' and Pink Houses,' as well as Bob Dylan's 'Highway 61 Revisited' for the intimate audience of 1,500 people, which included members of Woody Guthrie's family.

The CD and digital audio packages both feature the complete 15-song concert, while the vinyl LP highlights 10 performances from the show. All three configurations include a new liner notes essay by Bob Merlis.

I really enjoyed the Trouble No More studio album. Mellencamp's covers of blues, folk, Cajun, jazz and country songs is a wonderful testament to the power of American music.

In 2003, he performed the entire album at New York's Town Hall, plus a few of his own songs with new arrangements, and a blistering Bob Dylan's Highway 61 Revisited that fit. This has sat in the vaults since, and thanks to a new arrangement with Universal we get to hear it.

The band is on fire, with Andy York's great slide guitar driving the songs. To Washington gets a country hoedown treatment compared to the simple acoustic guitar accompaniment on the studio album. The three Mellencamp originals, all well known to even the casual fan, get new "rootsy" arrangements. Small Town is completely redone as a blues song! The rest of the songs from Trouble No More adhere pretty closely to the studio arrangements with little variation.

If you passed on the studio version because "it has no Johnny Cougar songs," I would encourage you pick this one up. The performance is great, especially if you are a fan of roots rock or Americana, or even a fan of Mellencamp in general. For collectors its a must.

According to Universal, this is the first of what could be a series of new releases from Mellencamp's catalog.

What a great CD! Working with a great band and great songs, this is one that Mellencamp should be very proud of. A nice addition are the few Mellencamp classics at the end done in a different style. He has always been great in concert, but this particular, different show really shines from the beginning to the end. Hope we don't have to wait another 11 years for another great live CD from Mellencamp.

I am by no means a John Mellencamp fan but I stumbled across this album and the description was intriguing. This is now my favorite set of tunes. The album features great live performances of blues, country, and folk tunes and proves to me the power of "roots" music. Mellencamp's voice suits the material, as does the band. One of my tests for musical quality is whether it stands up to repeated listening - this album passes that test with flying colors.

I agree with the other viewers here, this is a fantastic album from a fantastic era for Mellencamp. A must for his alternative take on his hits, and for his better approach to newer stuff as well.

2 factors that make this album so good: 1. Trouble No More is a very good album. A lot of the songs on this album were not written by Mellencamp. These are other American songwriters from older blues songs to recent. This provides a refreshing punch to the story lines of his songs. 2. Mellencamp is a very good performer. He delivers these songs with a tight, rich presentation. Trouble No More was a pivotal album for Mellencamp in helping him to define the sound and tone of the autumn of his career. JM and his band deliver an amazing performance on this album.

The stripped down version of Small Town is a special surprise.

There are not many live recordings of Mellencamp. This is well worth a purchase.

Good live rare as John Mellencamp did not perform this material very often... but it gives a glimpse of it's potential and the roots of what he was trying to do at the time for a very limited audience so we can all hear now.
This is not the Mellencamp of the rocking days though this is the beginning of the rough voiced older Mellencamp we have heard in most of his new material over the last dozen years or so... and for those that like that challenge it's here to enjoy

Best Live concert CD of John Mellencamp, you can feel the energy, the interaction and the creative different
versions of "Smalltown" and "Pink Houses.. the "Trouble No More " Cd album set is fabulous and the tweak John does on Bob Dylan's "Highway 62 Revisited" is fine considering it was 2003..Hope his upcoming tour and Studio CD are as good as this ..Highly Recommend it for ALL Mellencamp fans, a Must Have..

My first 5 star review for anything here.
A truly superb concert with great songs sung and played with passion. The band is tight and John is at the top of his game.
Every song is excellent and the recording was captured and mixed very well.
Highly recommended for any admirer of Mr. Mellencamp's recent musical journey!
