Had a hard time putting down this book!, January 26, 2011
Alex Austin, where have you been all my life?
Every now and then you read a book that stands out as one you'll always remember. Austin's The Perfume Factory is one of those books. A coming of age story with a serrated edge - but with poignancy and heart and even gentleness. Austin's narrator, Sam, clutched hold my heart, even when I wanted to throttle him for being a bonehead - he's a believable, flawed, sometimes heart-breaking character, but in all his flaws there lies the most aching honesty and sense of justice and vulnerability.
I looked forward to opening up this book every night, and read until I just couldn't keep my eyes open any longer. Although the book read quickly, a page turner, I didn't want it to end -and that's the biggest compliment I could give for a book--that, and the way Sam stayed with me long after I closed the book and set it back on my bookshelf.
A beautifully written book about loyalty, friendship, first loves, family--the good and the bad and somewhere in between, and growing up, and with an ending so tender, it left a lasting image imprint.
