Book Description

In the magical empire of Laenutia, beyond a gateway of cascading water, lies a kingdom in peril. The forces of evil are gathering, ready to oust the rightful rulers of the land. Chaos hovers as the ruthless Prince Validin sets his plans in motion. But there is hope. For in the sleepy village of Omondei lives a small, insatiably curious boy called Jeremiah, who dreams of doing something extraordinary. When Jeremiah is asked to travel beyond the walls of Omondei, he leaps at the chance. Along with a band of intrepid adventurers, Jeremiah is quickly drawn into an astonishing whirlwind of trickery and danger, where nothing is as it seems, and not everyone can be trusted.Who is the rightful ruler of Laenutia? And why are so many people desperate to win Jeremiah over to their side? The deeper Jeremiah travels towards the heart of this mystery, the closer he comes to learning who he is, what choices he has to make, and what his dreams foretell.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fun tale of adventure and conquering evil November 22, 2011

This book is a well paced, easy and comfortable read perfectly aimed at its audience. It does not confuse with lengthy or complicated explanations.
There is little darkness, giving the story a general feeling of happy confidence that good will triumph through traps and trials.
One keeps wondering what will happen to the endearing characters and where the next misstep will take them!
A fun tale of evil vanquished.
Perhaps the world has room for another story or two, even for a more mature audience in future.

5.0 out of 5 stars A true hero's journey! January 17, 2012

Following in the tradition of other "hero's journey" stories in the fantasy genre, Peril beyond the Waterfall tells the tale of a young boy, Jeremiah, who must venture beyond the known and the safe to embrace his true destiny. Along the way he makes some amazing friends (like the teddy-bear-like Nippenoe, and a wonderful elf called Aiden), but he will need to learn to distinguish between true friends and false advisors.

Jeremiah's hardest test comes beyond the waterfall, where the lure of power and the charm of evil are seductive. Jeremiah, like all heroes, needs to find the courage to deny his own comforts and glories, and to be loyal to the friends of his heart.

I think that children between 9 and 12 would most enjoy this book, and would relate to Jeremiah's sense that he doesn't quite belong in the neat world of his little village, that this boring life can't possibly be all there is of the world. The book rises to an exciting climax and the ending is a satisfying recognition and triumph that all children inherently long for.

I especially liked the use of humour, and the gently-introduced lessons that Jeremiah learns (that grown-ups are responsible for taking care of themselves, for instance, and the need to "preserve the balance between everything and everything else"). Lovely! A great introduction to fantasy for readers who are not quite ready for Narnia or Lord of the Rings.

5.0 out of 5 stars I cried at the end January 13, 2012

This is a wonderful adventure story with every fairytale creature you can imagine in it, and a couple you've never heard of. The book never lags, but moves from plot point to plot point flawlessly in a way that makes it impossible to put down. The characters are well developed and endearing, each one's personality crystal clear without too much time spent describing them. The author has a great sense of humour that I believe will appeal to both children and adults alike. I found myself laughing out loud, frowning in concern and biting back tears at the happy ending. Well done! This is a masterpiece.
