The information is accurate and written in an easy-to-understand format. The line drawings are interesting without being distracting or confusing. The book sticks to one topic, and one topic only. This reassuring and informative book can be enjoyed by girls of any age. Since girls are maturing early, and need this information at such a young age, I appreciate how this book could be shared with a young child without introducing sexual issues that the child isn't ready for.

Great for Young Girls,

My daughter is nine... I wanted something that would help her with "the basics" without getting into too much detail about sex. I was looking for something that would focus on HER body and how she is feeling... this book did that perfectly!

This book will be perfect for my 9 yr old and I to use as we discuss her next few years. It is so clear and written at a level she will surely understand. I have read MANY MANY books but they all mesh this topic in along with topics which are too old for a 9 yr old. However three of her friends have already started so she needs to be informed now.
As everyone has mentioned the text and drawings are very clear. I was afraid I would have to sketch things out for her - but not now since it's all here. The more teenage topic is quickly referenced on two separate pages in this book - but if she asks I will just say it's for a later discussion. I will be using this book along with Nancy Rue's "The Body Book, It's a God Thing". Both of these books are very well suited for a 9 yr old. I passed on "The Care and Keeping of You" and "Ready, Set, Grow" for adding in too much information that young girls don't need at ages 9 or 10.

A wonderful book for young women.,

This book explains menstruation in simple and medically acurate terms. It does not perpetuate any negative myths about menstruation either. I was very happy to see the section on alternative menstrual products, and also happy that it addressed the dangers of Toxic Shock Syndrome.
This book answers all the normal questions about menstruation, but it also gives great examples about how different every woman's body is and enforces the idea that being different is normal. I highly suggest getting this book for young women to learn about menstruation.

Wonderful Book!!!!!!!!!!,

I am SO glad this book is still in print. When I was 10, one of my girlfriends and I went to the library to find more books on getting our periods (we'd read Are You There God, It's Me, Margaret and wanted more information). We were the first girls in our class to have gotten bras, so we knew that we'd be getting our periods soon, and we were really excited and really apprehensive about it and what it would be like. We must have taken this book out for weeks, reading it over and over. It was a totally non-threatening, informative book that was easy to understand even without our parents' help. (In fact, I never even told my mother I'd taken it out of the library). Reading it gave me the courage to ask my mom to take me to the store to buy protection to have on hand for the big day--and when that day came, just a few months later, when I was 11, I was absolutely prepared. And it was because of this book. (I'm by no means advocating getting the book, giving it to your daughters and not talking to them about it--I think you should give it to them or read it to them with the understanding that you WILL talk to them about it and answer any and all of their questions). The best part of the book, though, isn't just the technical information, but the overall tone of the book--that a woman's period IS something exciting and new, and something to be proud of. And I am so happy I read the book and took that attitude with me. When the day it finally came (my first period) I was scared and thrilled all at the same time--I knew just what to do about it, because the book had told me, and I was so pleased that it meant that I was growing up. The attitude of my mother was less encouraging (probably becase she was freaked out that I was growing up and was looking at it as 55 years of cramps and pms for me) so I'm so glad the book got to me first! It can be a wonderful and exciting thing for a girl to have her first period, and this book was a wonderful gateway for me to learn about it as a child. I highly recommend it.

I purchased this book for my 11 year old step daughter. I didn't tell her that I bought it but when it came in the mail I just gave it to her and told her she needed to read it and then we could talk about it. She absolutely LOVED it and read it all the first night she had it. It is very age appropriate I think and doesn't give away too much information. Very good buy!

Break the ice with humor,
By
This review is from: Period (Paperback)
I am so sad to see this book is out of print, but I will still recommend it because the book became a wonderful tool to break the ice of informing young girls on the facts of life. While I have always been very open with my girls, it helps to let them have some private time with a book to learn about menstuation. This book offers so much informtion pertinent to what they need to know, but is presented in such a delightful way, that questions were easily asked and answered. The book features drawings and short bursts of questions and answers. The answers are in depth enough, yet can still facilitate furthur exploring between mother and daughter. The humor involved is appropriate and lightens the subject matter with respect. Truly a helpful book from adolescents and mothers alike.

Great Book,

When my 9 year old daughter started asking me questions about her body, I knew it was time for the talk. But I wanted to be prepared so I searched and searched for just the right book. I didn't want to get into SEX or male organs (that's a whole different talk). We really bonded by reading this book and discussing it together. She is now well informed about the changes that she will be going thru. This is a great book and perfect for younger girls.

College Student Review,
By Melissa Lowenstein (USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Period (Paperback)
I read this book in a child development course. I think it is an excellent book to give a child who has no mother or female role model to explain womanly changes. This book thoroughly describes a woman's period and all the details that men cannot describe if they tried. Such as, how to put in a tampon properly, natural cramp remedies, and symptoms of PMS. Of course this book is an excellent source for all teens with or without mother-figures, however, if you are a single father or in a gay marraige with a child - this is the book to give your daughter.

I bought this book for my daughter when she was 11 right after her first period. She was very happy to have it and carried it around for days reading and re-reading it. She shared it with several of her classmates and one even kept it all summer. She happily got it back (in a very used state) and is referencing it again. I tried to prepare her for the changes but this book covered things I forgot (which she was quick to point out). I recommend this for any parent who wants their daughter to have a clear and concise guide of what to expect with puberty.
