5.0 out of 5 stars A Masterpiece of a Book!, March 27, 2000

This review is from: Period Make-Up for the Stage: Step-By-Step (Hardcover)
In the field of theatrical make-up, there are many books for a beginning student to choose from, most of them priced outrageously and not all that helpful for practical use. This book is the exception! Swinfield's step-by-step guide is informative, and easy to read. Nearly 90% of this book is filled with full-color photos of well-applied practical make-ups for the stage. The Make-up section is organized in chronological order, showing full make-up, hair & costume styles for each era. These range from early Egyptian looks, to the changing styles of British Restoration and Victorian haute couture, up to the flapper-style of the 1920's and the punk-rockers of the late 70's. Each section includes make-up ideas for both male and female actors, and most of these time-categories include detailed illustrations of certain areas of the face, which makes the make-ups easier to duplicate. The opening section of the book gives a complete listing of all the supplies needed to apply these make-ups and includes pages on corrective, scar and special effects tips. A great book for any actor's shelf, this guide is like flipping through the pages of history itself.
