The Period Pocketbook: Honest Answers with Advice from Real Girls

After searching for weeks for a book for my niece (12 years old) I was so happy to find this one. It's just what I wanted: a book solely about periods. All the other books I was reviewing were either geared for much younger readers or older teens. This book is perfect in that it covers so much about menstruation and answers questions girls may have but are afraid to ask. What I especially liked was that the frank discussion about sex reinforced that just because a girl gets her period doesn't mean she's ready for sex. The book discussed sex in a short, matter of fact way and didn't include any information that wasn't appropriate for girls in the 10-14 age range (other books were just way too graphic about the sex and masturbation which is fine if it's a 16 year old reading it, but not for a young girl of 12). Anyway, I also liked that there were question and answer sections at the end of each chapter and that the book stresses that it's important for girls to have someone to talk to about their bodies. I think it's a great way to introduce girls to their bodies without the embarassment of having to ask someone. There was a lot of information about a wide range of issues about periods, but again, I really liked that the entire book was mainly covering menstruation rather than all the other topics that other books include. Will definitely buy a copy for my other nieces (when it's time) and for my own daughters.

I really would just like to take the book and remove the sexual intercourse part. I think other books do a less graphic job of explaining this.
