This ruler has a little hole in it. You put your sewing machine needle in the down position (into the hole) and then the right edge of the ruler will show you EXACTLY where the edge of your fabric should be as you sew a perfect scant 1/4" seam.

This is a wonderful thing to own if you work on your projects on different machines or with different feet. With the accurate measurement that this gives you, you will be able to have your seams on a project match perfectly even if you've used different machines at classes, at a friend's house, or if you've used your traveler machine instead of your big home machine.

I have 4 sewing machines, and about 7 different feet that I could use to do patchwork piecing. With this ruler, I found that one of my feet that came with my new Janome was *not* close to a 1/4 inch seam - my complete story with pics is on nightowlsally.com

For the machine piecer, this is a necessity, particularly if you don't have a machine specific to quilting, or have an older machine that doesn't have feet manufactured for the machine. After years of trouble with 1/4" foot after another, this little gadget showed me how much bigger my seam was than the needed scant-quarter one needs for precise piecing. A slight adjustment to my needle position, and I'm finally sewing the correct seam size on my old Elna...a joy. Good for the hand piecer, too...measure twice; stitch or cut once.

My ¼” seams were perfect, but my finished pieces were not. My new Janome with its ¼” foot was letting me down. I hadn’t even realized it until I started a postage stamp quilt. I was losing almost ½” every 10 squares. That’s a LOT! Recommended by Harriet Hargrave, I purchased this seam guide to try to get perfect SCANT ¼” seams. It works perfectly! And so easy…just drop the needle through the hole, and place a permanent guide of some type at the edge of the Plastic Seam Guide. I also purchased QTools Sewing Edge, an adhesive purple vinyl strip, which I used as my sewing guide. Instantly my seams went from troublesome to perfect. If your pieces aren’t perfect because your seams are too big, this will solve the problem. I wish I’d done this long ago. Someday I may search for the perfect ¼” foot, but for now I’m one happy piecing-machine.

Do not buy this as it is a complete waste of money. I paid $8.96 plus postage. You don't need this for a guide for sewing scant quarter inch. Place end of your old measuring tape under presser foot. Locate where scant quarter inch would be. Lower presser foot and let your needle punch a hole through it. Then, straighten measuring tape so it is parallel with edge of throat plate (see picture) and do as the directions for the guide state: "Place masking tape, several layers of sticky notes or QTools Sewing Edge (pictured) up against the guide to mark a Perfect Scant 1/4 inch." You don't need a fancy guide like this when any old measuring tape could be used to do the same thing.

JUST what I needed to help me figure out my scant! What my Janome said was 1/4 in and what I needed it to be were 2 different things.

As a beginning quilter it is important to get the seams at a "scant" 1/4" and this guide does the trick! I am able to get my pieces to match better and end up the right size.

Ten dollars for one tiny piece of plastic? Overpriced and of limited value. After you use it once you really have no need for it again. This is NOT a necessity, don't waste your money unless you can find one for a dollar. Make sure to read all the reviews so you know exactly what you are getting. I have no one to blame but myself for making the mistake of buying this.

I use this to set up a piecing guide on my machine. Worked like a charm. Now I have a perfect 1/4 inch seam from any of my machines.
