Oriole nectar feeder,

Orioles readily take nectar from my 8 oz. Perky-Pet Four Fountains hummingbird feeders, and can quickly empty them. Buying larger hummingbird feeders was not entirely satisfactory since all have feeding ports which exclude non-hummers. I got this Opus oriole feeder so the orioles would have their own large capacity feeder.
My feeder has springy buttons in the nectar ports which act as bee guards. (Note: The image on this page differs slightly from the feeder I received.) Initially the orioles and hummers explored the feeder but were unable to figure out the bee guards. After a few days I removed the bee guards, which involved undoing a few screws, and thereafter both orioles and hummers used the feeder. The feeder disassembles into three parts: the clear plastic reservoir bottle and the two parts of the orange base. The bottom of the base houses the adjustable perches. If you submerge your feeder to clean it, this part will require some shaking and draining, but this is a minor matter. All parts of the base which touch the nectar are readily accessible for cleaning. This is a good feeder for those crunch times when a lot of nectar is being consumed, but the orioles really prefer the Perky-Pets. Finally, _I_ really prefer a glass reservoir and just couldn't give five stars to a feeder without one.

Unpacked it, filled it and hung it up. Had Orioles right away. This unit was a replacement for a another brand that allowed the Humming Birds to feed as well as the Orioles. The Hummers were confused and unable to feed from this one because of the bee guards. We disassembled the unit and removed the bee guards (bees aren't a significant problem in our area). Now everybody feeds!
Nice unit. I would recommend it.

This feeder works fine, however, it is the most difficult thing to clean I've ever had! First of all the container is a really awkward shape. It does not fit in your hand very well due to it's wide girth. An old soda bottle would be easier to handle! Secondly, it has a very small mouth which makes it difficult to insert a bottle brush. Then on the inside there are small plastic squiggles that hold the nectar dispensing buttons on which are also difficult to clean. The other problem is emptying the bottle. It's flattened at the bottom and even with vigorous shaking you can never completely empty it.If they were to change the shape of the bottle (make it smaller in girth and widen the mouth) It could be a great product!

We tried another brand of oriole feeder two summers ago and had to get rid of it because of the problem it created with the local bees: some crawled into the feeding holes and drowned, others created a swarm around the feeder, and the rest decided they owned the patio and chased us indoors. The spring-loaded bee guards on this model keep the bees at bay--in fact, they don't even try to get into it--and the orioles have had absolutely no trouble pushing past the guards to get their drink. I did notice a slow-drip leak after a few days, but fixed that easily by making sure that the two parts of the orange (bottom) portion of the feeder are screwed together completely. Other reviewers have written that they'd prefer a glass upper canister instead of plastic, but be careful what you wish for. One heavy-footed oriole landed so hard on this feeder that she knocked it off its mounting hook; the feeder fell 6 feet and landed on the concrete patio without breaking. All things considered, I'm delighted with this design and plan to buy a spare before someone changes it.

Bought two of these after seeing orioles at our humming bird feeders. The bottoms of each are made in two parts that screw together. The problem is that both of them slowly leak out through this joint and will become empty overnite. They are worthless!Opus 449-2 Oriole Feeder

Oriole Feeder a Success in Baja,

I purchased one of these a year ago, when I noticed the Scott's Orioles trying to eat out of our hummingbird feeders. They were unsuccessful, as their beaks were too large. I found one of the Opus feeders online, and when it was installed in our yard, we had an Oriole invasion; both Scott's and Hooded Orioles congregated around it. One smart family even built a nest about 10' away from the feeder! It's easy to clean and fill, easy to assemble, and the birds love it. The only thing that might improve this feeder is if the reservoir was glass instead of plastic, but we're very happy with it.

I've already attracted 4 pairs of beautiful Orioles with this great feeder filled with pulp-free orange juice! Now I've also purchased a fly-through feeder which I'm putting grape jelly and halved oranges into for the birds........what a marvelous feeder.........thanks.

The oriole's didn't like this, but it didn't last more than a week until the sun beating on it warped where the bottom connected to the middle section & then it leaked. I should have returned it, but instead tossed it. Very disappointing. May have been OK in the shade, but the birds didn't care for it anyway. They liked the hummingbird feeder.

I've had this out for a couple of weeks now and it seems to be working fine. Seems to be well made and has not leaked. The orioles went to it within a couple of days. The picture looks like the feeding stations are made of rubber or something, but the one I received is hard plastic with the little plastic balls to keep bees out. The orioles just push the ball through to get the nectar. I added a couple of pictures of orioles feeding.

We had searched in vain for an oriole feeder locally. The main drawback being bees and wasps were able to penetrate the feeder, and were then drowning. This feeder works! Orioles are happy, bees less so, but are at least living to tell the tale.
