Product Description

The Perky-Pet Squirrel-Be-Gone Wild Bird Feeder features six feeding ports, U-shaped perches and holds 3.4 lbs. of seed. The interior seed tower is surrounded by rustic metalwork. The feeding ports have sturdy metal perches that allow birds to feed comfortably but, when the squirrels perch on them, their weight causes the entire metal casing to slip down, completely blocking the feeding ports and their access to the seed. The six perch/feeding station set-up, coupled with the anti-squirrel technology makes this feeder one of the most economical and convenient on the market! The clear, shatter-proof plastic reservoir makes it easy to monitor seed levels. Remember to clean your feeder once every two weeks with mild soap and water solution. Comes fully assembled with seed tray. Perky-Pet is the leading supplier of Wild Bird Feeders and Accessories. Perky-Pet Wild Bird Feeder models lure the bird in pursuit of seed providing you with hours of joy as random wild birds flock to feed at your house.

Perky-Pet 336 Squirrel-Be-Gone Wild Bird Feeder

Turn your yard into a bird lovers' paradise. This Perky-Pet Squirrel-Be-Gone Wild Bird Feeder attracts everything from cardinals, doves, finches, flickers, and grackles to grosbeaks, jays, juncos, and kinglets--even sparrows, wrens, and woodpeckers. Best of all, this wild bird feeder provides an optimal feeding station for birds--without catering to those sneaky squirrels.

Sorry, Squirrels!

A charming addition to any outdoor space, this beautiful feeder features a durable plastic seed chamber, attractive metal caging with a powder-coated rustic brown finish, and ornamental leaves that are more than just decorative.

This feeder's innovative weight-activated exterior cage wraps protectively around the seed compartment. When a squirrel climbs onto the cage, the spring-loaded exterior cage drops down, throwing the squirrel off balance and lowering the ornamental leaves on the cage down into position where they effectively act as a barrier, covering the seed ports and preventing squirrels from pillaging the seed supply. Easy-to-access settings allow for adjusting the cage's spring tension as necessary.

This feeder's six seed ports nicely dispense bird seed, while its six bird-preferred, U-shaped metal perches allow birds to comfortably perch and feed. The bird's weight won't lower the cage, but when a squirrel climbs on, down it goes.

Easy to Fill and Use

This innovative Squirrel-Be-Gone wild bird feeder comes fully assembled and makes a lovely addition to any personal collection or a thoughtful gift idea. This feeder holds up to 2 pounds of black oil sunflower seed, peanuts, or mixed seed. After filling the bird feeder, simply hang it in the yard, and watch as your feathered friends swoop in to celebrate.

Suggested Placement

This wild bird feeder comes with a wire loop for hanging near a back deck, porch, patio, or a window overlooking a garden or landscaped area in your yard. Choose a location that not only provides a great view, but that is also bird friendly. Birds prefer an open space, so they can easily move from one feeding port to the next. They also like to be in a location that gets both sun and partial shade during the day. An ideal location will be between 5 and 8 feet off the ground and within 15 feet of nearby coverage, like bushes and shrubs, so birds feel safe and protected from predators.

Cleaning the Feeder

The clear, plastic seed compartment makes it easy to monitor seed levels at a glance. Be sure to keep this bird feeder clean and filled with fresh seed or feed to ensure happy birds and return visits. Perky-Pet recommends checking this bird feeder once a week for insects or mold and cleaning it every few weeks with a mild soap and water solution.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. What are the most popular bird seeds to use?

A. Black Oil Sunflower Seed is the most popular bird seed. It is much smaller than the traditional sunflower seed and best for those birds with smaller bills, such as the sparrow, junco and goldfinch. This seed is accepted by the greatest variety of birds.

Mixed Seed is also popular. It is best to buy the mixes that contain white proso millet, a tiny cream colored seed with a shiny shell. Mixes containing finely cracked corn and black oil sunflower are also preferred by a large number of birds.

Nyger (Thistle Seed) is imported from Africa and Asia. Nyger won't germinate, however, it has a tendency to become moldy due to lack of air circulation. If you notice mold on the seed, it must be removed from the feeder and the feeder must be cleaned thoroughly.

Q. How do I clean my bird feeders?

A. Before filling your feeder with fresh seed, it is recommended that the following precautions are taken:

  1. Remove all old seed.
  2. Soak feeder in a light water/bleach solution (9 parts water to 1 part bleach).
  3. Scrub feeder and allow to air dry.
  4. Rake and remove accumulated hulls and droppings from underneath the feeders.
  5. Spread mulch (bark or wood) under the feeder, replace mulch when soiled.
  6. Thoroughly wash hands after handling and cleaning feeders.

Q. What is the importance of providing water for wild birds?

A. Wild birds need fresh, clean water just as much as they need seed. Birds stay healthy by using water not just for drinking, but also for bathing, cleaning their feathers and to remove parasites. Waterers are better options than bird baths because they provide birds with fresh, clean water that prevents dirt and debris from contaminating it. In hotter climates or seasons, providing water for birds makes it easy for them to have access to a water source and retain their energy. By adding a water source, you also can attract a larger variety of birds to your yard. You may even attract more colorful birds that don't eat seed, but are in need of water!

This feeder is NOT squirrel proof!
Amazon Customer
Opened up a nice hole so the seed spilled on the ground and also the squirrel could feed right through the hole.

I bought this bird feeder last year. The birds really enjoyed it, and the squirrels had to take the leavings they dropped... However, it no longer works this year, because the springs that operate it have broken. They are on the outside, exposed to the weather, and they just didn't last long enough. The other thing, is that the squirrels learned to grab ahold of it and shake it, which sprayed the seed out for them to get. I'm looking at a new feeder, this time with the springs on the *inside*!

I've had this feeder for two years and simply love it! No squirrel has defeated it's clever locking mechansim and now leave it completely alone. Ours hangs from a deck railing way up in the trees. It holds a good amount of seed and is easy to fill. The numerous metal perches allow many birds to feed at once. Other so called "squirrel proof" types simply did not do the job and I would not buy any other kind from now on.

We have this feeder and although things started off looking good, they quickly changed. At first the squirrels would try to feed and the mechanism worked well and the leaves covered the feeding holes. The squirrels left and we thought all was good. Then we noticed they were staying around more. I took a close look at it and guess what, they have chewed the plastic around the feeding hole so that now it is larger than the leaf covers. They can eat to their heart's content. Also, chipmunks do not weigh enough to make the mechanism work. From day one, the chipmunks were able to feast to their hearts content. The idea behind this feeder is good. However they need to put metal around the holes. That would make it more squirrel proof, however, chipmunks could still feast. Don't waste your money on this one, unless the manufacturer starts to put metal around the holes.

I, too, must have fat squirrels in my yard. The little buggers broke the springs on this (cuss word) feeder within a day. It's a lot easier, and less expensive, to put a Mandarin baffler OVER your feeder than to buy one of these stupid things. I tried twice and both feeders were returned because the springs popped after a day. As other reviewers said, it's also a bear to keep the inside of the thing clean. There's no way to get to the very bottom of the feeder in the corners. The slightest bit of moisture that gets to the seed and your seed will sprout, making for a lot of sick birds.

Do NOT buy this bird feeder. It seemed like a good idea---until one of my beautiful Cardinals had her head in/near the port and a larger bird landed on the feeder, closing the ports---and breaking the neck of the Cardinal. I still regret so much that I bought this feeder. It is a bird GUILLOTINE!!!

Checked and filled the feeder with sunflower seeds, hung it outside and visually checked the seed level from inside the house. I had seen very little bird activity on the feeder which I put down to the fact that there were fewer birds around because of snow on the ground and the feeder was new. The squirrels, however, paid periodic visits.

After 2 weeks I checked the feeder closely only to find both springs were missing which I have to assume were inadvertently dislodged by the squirrels. I found one spring but the feeder needs two. Since I cannot find replacement springs I will return this to the store.

The squirrels in my trees have made a mockery of this feeder. They waive at me while they hang on it and scoop piles of feed from the holes....entertaining but scaring the birds off......

I bought the product and have had to re-engineer it 4 times.
(1) Strap is weak, squirrels broke it the first day by rough treatment.
I replaced the strap with galvanized wire.
(2) Squirrels pulled off the bottom cap which is held by 2 little "ears".
I drilled and screwed the bottom cap to the plastic tube.
(3) They shook it until the cross post which supports the hanging strap
slipped out of its little ear holes. I replaced the post with a 3 inch
bolt and a tee nut.
(4) Now they were really frustrated and at the place where the spring goes
into a small hole in the plastic tube, they chewed a hole big enough
to get their head in to eat the seed. I lined the top with sheet metal.
NOW, it is squirrel proof.
